Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

I hope many of you had the opportunity to scan and read our 'Journey to 11+' document - if you haven't please email bgolden@oakfield.dulwich.sch.uk and he will be happy to send you a copy. The document illustrates the process and guidance we provide to children and families as they move through the school so they are fully prepared to navigate and succeed at 11+ and onward to secondary school.

On this theme it has been fantastic to see our bespoke Oakfield Diploma kick off for our current crop of Year 6s in quite brilliant fashion. The Diploma is a unique opportunity for the children to broaden their learning, further develop transferable skills and take part in new areas of enquiry once their 11+ exams are finished. This week alone has included environmental workshops, 3D design exploration and an interactive masterclass in TV presentation from international stars and creators; Paul and Jill Brunson, Tom Read Wilson and YouTube Vlogger Josiah. Thank you so much to our organisers and contributors to the Diploma as well as the children who are challenging themselves to go out of their comfort zone and build lots of new skills and interests.

We look forward to sharing more updates about the Diploma on our newsletters but there will be lots more on our social media channels so make sure you subscribe to @oakfieldprep on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter!

Have wonderful weekends all.

YEAR 6

OAKFIELD DIPLOMA

Eco Workshop

As part of the Year 6 Diploma, we invited a company called 'Green Up Your Act' to come in and run an upcycling afternoon workshop.

Philip, Miss Francis and Mrs Fidler helped the children to make a wallet from an old juice carton and their own notebooks from scraps of paper, maps and cardboard! We also looked at upcycled examples such as pencil cases made out of can ring pulls and plastic ice cream wrappers!

To finish, we spoke about the importance of reusing materials instead of throwing them away and harming our beautiful planet.

3D Design

The Year 6 diploma is well underway this week and the children are getting well and truly stuck in!

In the 3D design group, we have begun with a wooden model design of a rally car!

We are all looking forward to getting our cars ready for spray painting next week!

TV Presenting

We had an incredible workshop today with stars of the small and big screen and we will be sharing lots of clips on our social media channels so follow us for those! Here are just a few snaps from the session today! Thank you again to Paul and Jill Brunson, Tom Read Wilson and vlogger Josiah for putting together an amazing session and group of scenarios which enabled the children to grasp the pressures of filming and learning to deal with the unpredictability of live TV!

YEAR 1

This week in our Topic lesson, Year 1 went to Belair Park. The children worked in partners to identify different plants and trees in the environment. The children had a lovely time, exploring in the sun!

UPPER FOUNDATION

Velodrome Masterclass

This week the children got to visit and have a cycle at Herne Hill Velodrome! Thank you to Mr Heasman for joining our trip and well done to the children for getting on 2 wheels!

Transport Dress-Up Day

Today the children have had a fantastic time. They look spectacular in their costumes and have enjoyed talking about their favourite modes of transport. We have had a great time doing transport themed activities such as moon biscuit decorating, fruit rocket building and even driving school in the playground!

LOWER FOUNDATION

ROCKET AND ROLL

This week the explorers are going to space. The children have been working as a team to paint, design and create their own rocket for the classroom. They then added lots of shapes and mixed media to add texture!

NURSERY

The nursery children explored a range of sensory materials this week. We had cornflour, cornflakes, coloured sand, beans and shredded paper. We used these sessions to help the children to identify colours, textures and develop their interactions and taking turns.
