Principal's message

As Principal, I am always thrilled to begin my message with student achievement. Congratulations to all students who participated in recent events:

  • Open Girls Netball team
  • Debating teams
  • Ruby in the Legacy Public Speaking competition
  • Regional Athletics team
  • Under 15s Basketball team
  • Dance ensemble and vocalists that performed at Showcase @ The Juniors
  • Andrew Keating for helping one of our neighbours Roslyn to collect her bins.

Year 12

Congratulations to Year 12 who have just completed their Trial HSC examinations. The attitude and behaviour of our students was excellent.

School leadership

Term 3 signals the final term of our school leaders and the beginning of the process for the next leadership team. I encourage students to put their hat in the ring for the various leadership positions in the school. It is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and be recognised for their personal qualities.

Student expectations

A timely reminder to students of our expectations here at South Sydney High School.

As a school community, we expect all students to do their very best, be respectful of each other, show good manners and wear the South Sydney High School uniform with pride to and from school. Most importantly we expect all SSHS students to take ownership of their learning journeys.

Assessment

As I have mentioned at various times during the year, all students must be mindful of assessment requirements in all their subjects. It is a good idea to have the due dates for tasks written on a calendar at home and all students to be familiar with the assessment procedures as outlined in the assessment booklets.

Big Picture @ South Sydney High School

We are very excited that 28 students applied for Big Picture due to commence next year. This means two advisories can run. An exciting opportunity for these students!!

Stay tuned for more updates as our Big Picture planning and organisation continues.

As our term moves forward it is a timely reminder for all students to reflect on the following words:

"Follow the three R’s: – Respect for self - Respect for others – Responsibility for all your actions." Dalai Lama XIV

UNSW Gateway Spring Program Year 11

Next Wednesday 17th August, Year 11 students will have the opportunity to participate in a seminar by UNSW about their GATEWAY Spring Program.

The GATEWAY program is an early conditional offer for students in Year 12 attending gateway schools (South Sydney HS is a GATEWAY school). It significantly adjusts the ATAR requirements for your preferred UNSW degree and provides you with an early conditional offer to UNSW.

The GATEWAY Spring program, in interactive faculty experiences, showcases the range of degrees available to study and what it’s really like to be a student at UNSW. You will also have access to academic support in key subject areas and can start thinking about your Gateway Admission Pathway application.

Follow this link to find out more: https://www.futurestudents.unsw.edu.au/gateway-spring

I am looking forward to seeing Year 11 at the session in the Staff Common Room at 12.49pm. The session will run for an hour.

Google Classroom - Careers

A timely reminder that Google Classroom - Careers is my main method of communication with everything related to Careers. It is particularly important for all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to be in the Google classroom.

Thank you to those students who have already joined.

Apprenticeships and School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (SBAT)

I am reaching out to the community after the Year 10 Subject Selection night. There are some Year 10 students very interested in leaving school to pursue an apprenticeship pathway.

There are also students who have expressed an interest in a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship.

I would like to hear from people in the community who have the capacity to take on South Sydney High School students or you might know of a mate or local tradesperson looking for an apprentice.

I believe in helping our young people to find the right pathway and set them up for the future.

Please reach out to me with any details. Your support is greatly appreciated.

CBCA Book Week

The biggest event of the year, Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Book Week, is almost upon us. Book Week is held in Week 6, 22th - 26th August 2022. This year’s theme is Dreaming with Eyes Open. This is a wonderful description of the effects of reading and the many places reading can take you within your imagination, intellectually and in contemplation.

There are fantastic prizes to be won in various Book Week competitions – come down to the Library and have a look.

The CBCA Book of the Year awards are be announced on Friday 19 August. Check out the shortlisted books available in the library – will you pick the winner?

Premier’s Debating Challenge Update

The Premier’s Debating Challenge has wrapped up for our Years 7 & 8 and Years 9 & 10 debating teams. Our teams debated issues involving sport, science and environment, politics and social media. The Year 9 & 10 team unfortunately were unsuccessful in their debates against experienced teams from Sydney Boys and Randwick Girls High Schools. The Year 7 & 8 team suffered a loss against Rose Bay Secondary College, but ended their campaign with a fantastic victory against Randwick Girls High School.

South Sydney High School has a number of enthusiastic and talented debaters, who represented the school with great distinction. I look forward to their further improvement and future success.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

This is the final reminder for students to update their reading records. The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes for student entries on Friday 19th August 2022.

Showcase @ The Juniors

Showcase @ The Juniors has been a wonderful performance opportunity for our region over the past 27 years, giving local primary and high schools the chance to come together in a series of evenings celebrating the Performing Arts.

South Sydney High was represented by a combined dance and music performance of Unsteady by X Ambassadors, a lyrical song that challenged both dancers and vocalists to draw on their technique, creativity and the ability to express emotional intensity. The five dancers worked collaboratively with Ms Woodbridge and Ms Geldart to incorporate a range of gymnastic and dance skills, creating choreography that highlighted synchronised ensemble and individual performances. This blended seamlessly with the vocal duo, who gave the song its narrative anchor through their assured vocal delivery and harmonies.

Congratulations to our talented students for their sophisticated performance and we look forward to further developing the repertoire of the dance ensemble throughout the year.

Vale Robert (Bob) Outterside AO

We were saddened to learn of the passing of a local personality, Bob Outterside, last Monday evening, aged 90 years.

Bob was a former science teacher at South Sydney High School (formerly South Sydney Junior Tech) in the 1950’s. At that time the school only taught to Intermediate Certificate level, the equivalent of our Years 7 to 9.

During those years the school fielded eight ‘very-competitive’ rugby league teams, graded by weight. Bob was the coach of the lightest weight team (5st 7’s) fondly known as “The-Flying-Fleas”

He later taught at Cleveland Street High School before becoming the Headmaster at Sydney Boys High School.

Bob was ex Randwick rugby player, captain, coach and life member and most notably an Australian Wallaby, touring South Africa in 1953.

And in 1990 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his service to education.

Mr Ian Holder, former student 1955-57
