Chemistry HBL TERM 2

HBL Task

Products made from hydrocarbon fractions exist as your everyday household items or appliances. From items in your home, take three pictures of items coming from at least two different hydrocarbon fractions, and to each item,

1. State which hydrocarbon fraction is used to produce the item,

2. Describe how the item is used, with relevant chemical concepts and equations,

3. State two physical or chemical properties of the item that facilitates its function, and

4. Describe how the item will be disposed after its use.

Bath foam

The bath foam contains detergent. Detergent molecules have hydrocarbon portions that are from the petroleum fractions. Detergents work as surfactants. They lower the surface tension of water, making it less likely to stick to itself and able to bind with oils and soiling particles. The shampoo is liquid and viscous that helps to clean dirt off the person's body. The shampoo will be washed off the body, sent to NEWater, which will be filtered out.

Swiss knife

The handles of the Swiss knives are made is made from naphtha fraction of crude oil. This polymer is poly vinyl chloride (PVC) which is cheap and durable. PVC piping is cheaper than metals used in musical instrument making; it is therefore a common alternative when making instruments, often for leisure or for rarer instruments such as the contrabass flute. PVC is not easy to recycle as this polymer was made by addition polymerization. Thus, it is best to use it for a long time.

Nail polish

It consists largely of petroleum resin, which is of the petrol fraction of crude oil. This nail polish consist of petroleum resin which makes it viscous, so that one can apply this product on their nails which it flowing off the nail. As well, petroleum resin has a tackifying chemical effect which stiffens brittle nails, however, applying too much of this product will cause nails to be too stiff and eventually crack. It can be removed by nail polish remover and filtered off the water channels when nail polish remover is washed off.
