Southwest Dwellings By Annie

This is what Native American Indians look like.

Imagine if your where one of the indians that lived 2,000 years ago in the southwest and you had to build a pueblo that took up to four months to build. Some pueblo indians lived in Colorado, Utah, Arizona.

This is what Southwest native Americans looked like.

When did the Indians arrive? How did the pueblo Indians get their name?

The indians arrived in January 1st before the 1350’s into the southwest. Then later they split up and went to live in Colorado,Utah,Arizona. Than the Anasazi built cliff houses that are like castles under a rock to protect their people from attacks by hostile tribes. Then soon after the Anasazi started to build their adobe homes. Than they named their adobe homes pueblos. They got that name from a spanish word for Village or Town.

This is one example of a pueblo but all pueblo's look different.

What kinds of homes did the pueblo indians lived in?

Indians live in what is called a pueblo that has five different levels stacked on to each other. Pueblo indians also built underground rooms called Kivas which were used for religious ceremonies. Each pueblo had a certain number of Kivas. Pueblos had hundreds of rooms. The indians used adobe because adobe can be made into a thick wall which keeps them cool when it's hot and warm when it’s cold. They also used wood for their roofs but the pueblo indians had to walk miles in order to get wood for their roofs. They called their home adobe because of the adobe bricks. It took four months to build an adobe home.

Climate in the southwest was very dry because of the lack of water.

The unexpected climate where the pueblo indians live

Most indians have to face droughts especially in the southwest. A drought means it is a very dry place with not a lot of water. They also have to face sand storms and blizzards, and flash floods which during these conditions the pueblo people stayed dry and warm in their adobes.

In the southwest pueblo's had blue doors because of many different indians beliefs.

Why did pueblo indians have blue doors?

Did you know that some pueblos have blue doors well there are three different reasons one of the reasons is to keep away evil spirits the second reason is because blue is the color of Virgin Mary’s robe and the third reason is because blue indicates one of the four sacred directions of pueblo life.

Adobe bricks are the main material to build a pueblo house.

What materialize pueblo’s used to build a pueblo

To make a pueblo you need clay, Adobe, and wood. Adobe is made from sand and straw that is dried into bricks.

This is kinda an idea of what the southwest looks like.

In the southwest native americans did a lot of strange things like build a pueblo out of adobe.Today indians that where from the southwest livie in houses like we do but they don’t have electronics or any of the things that we have.
