Unknown rebel Photographer: Stuart Franklin, 1989

This photo shows the Unknown Rebel (or Tank Man), who is the symbol of the Tiennamen Square protests. He is a student who put himself in front of a series of tanks to stop them. The fact happened on June 5th 1989, the day after the Chinese government started to brutally suppress the demonstrations. When he appearad in front of the tanks, they tried to surround him, but the man put himself in front of them again and again. After having blocked the tanks, the boy climbed up the turret of the tank and started talking to the driver. The picture made history because it is the symbol of the Tiennamen Square protests and of the struggle by Chinese people against Communism. Although the demonstrations didn’t succeed and there were plenty of victims, the protesters and the opponents of the Communist regime made their situation known to the other countries around the world. A lot of photos of the Unknown Rebel were taken but the most famous one is the one taken by Jeff Widener from a hotel of Beijing. Another version is the one of Stuart Franklin which shows more tanks in front of the man. In 2003 this photo was inserted in the section “The 100 photos which have changed the world” of the Life magazine.
