Gender at Work

"Gender at Work is an international feminist knowledge network." They strive to give organizations and communities the resources and creative approaches to fight against discriminatory social norms. They work to shed light on systems of oppression and the inequalities women face in the workplace and everyday life all around the world.

"I would like to thank Gender at Work for allowing me to be part of this process and to thank the facilitators to open up their hearts and share everything with us. You have an amazing team in South Africa; I had never seen a team like this in my experience. I commend the Gender at Work management for the type of work that they do; it is very encouraging. It is a process that changes individuals; you can't just stay the same. It's like a rebirth; it makes you a new person. I encourage them to share the process with the world. They may not realize this is but they are touching a lot of lives. It is like seeds that grow in bigger fruits. I am very grateful for being here and for being part of this process." - Capacity Development Program Participant

The founding of Gender at work was inspired by the book Gender at Work: Organizational Change for Equality written by Aruna Rao, Rieky Stuart, and David Kelleher (pictured above). In 2001 Gender at Work organization was officially founded with the help of several associates like the Women's Rights in Development (AWID), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UnWomen), World Alliance for Citizens (CIVICUS), and Women's Learning Partnership (WLP). Then in 2003, it became an official non-profit (genderatwork.org).
Gender at Work has partners all around the world including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Cambodia, State of Palestine, Uganda, U.S.A., Vietnam, South Africa, and Zambia.

Their mission statement: "Gender at Work envisions a world that values and respects women's human right and cultures of equality, especially gender equality. We understand that to change systems of power that hold inequality in place, relationships between people, institutions, and organizations" (genderatwork.org).

Gender at Work uses this framework to help educate communities on gender inequalities as well as help uncover opportunities and the barriers that stand in the way of social change. This same framework has been shared with many large NGOs and organizations to help guide their way to success.

"This process has had an impact in my way of not just looking for work, but the whole world. Now I look at everything from a feminist lens, whether it is conversations with family or friends or while watching a film. My own sense of reflection and understanding of self has improved, and I have realized that to be able to look critically at oneself is something really important. I am able to handle and engage with feedback in more constructive ways." - Feminist Leadership Program Participant

Gender at Work has its own separate branch in India called "Gender at Work India." They have been there since 2015 and strive to make workspaces inclusive for women. As well as help them network and make professional connections.
