Ms. Waltz's Second Grade Class at Woodcrest Elementary just completed their Narrative Writing Celebration. We started out with our Small Moment Ideas and created wonderful Narratives. We elaborated on our topics and created many details to paint a picture for the reader. Then, we went through the writing process of rereading, revising, peer editing, and preparing for publication. We had a great day for Celebration in our costumes!!

Created in 1921, AEW is an opportunity to: celebrate public education, inform the community of the accomplishments and needs of public schools, secure cooperation and support from the public, and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education.
On Wednesday, November 2, all DK-5th grade teachers and elementary media centers received a wonderful donation of the picture book, Lailah’s Lunchbox. A heartfelt thank you to the Islamic Center of Midland for sharing their love of literacy with our elementary students. Through this book, students will have the opportunity to learn about Ramadan. As IB-PYP World Schools, our elementary students work to build intercultural understanding and respect. As a way to build international mindedness within our students, we embrace different cultures, traditions and celebrations.
Parents/Guardians, please watch your email for an invitation to use GoGuardian Parent later this week. GoGuardian Parent is a mobile app designed to provide parents/guardians insight and control over their student's online activity when on school-managed devices and accounts.
MHS Veterans Day Celebration

On Friday, November 11th, the MHS Social Studies Department hosted their annual Veterans Day Celebration. More than fifteen Veterans came to speak to students each hour in the Media Center. Veterans comprised a variety of expertise, rank, branch, and ages ranging from 21 years old to 75 years old (former Vietnam Vets). Of the fifteen who visited, eight were Chemic Alumni. Students from Social Studies classes were invited to attend throughout the day and the event welcomed more than 150 students each hour. This year we had a panel format and History Teacher, Dave McPeak, emceed the event by fielding student questions from the audience. All Veterans had an opportunity to respond to student questions and share their individual experiences and stories. The Veterans represented all branches of the military and a wide range of training, knowledge, and experience. One local Veteran, Brianna Mcgillen, spoke about what it's like to be a young woman in the field of mechanics and the challenges she faces. Two of our Veterans are fluent in Farsi and did psychological operations and Intelligence Operations in Iraq. Abby Scott, a junior, said, "I really liked hearing about the different jobs they did and how different their experiences were in things like boot camp, assignments, and deployment." Many of our Veterans had combat experience and others served more locally but each one had an important job to do and learned valuable life lessons. Freshman, Ava Kontranowski stated, "What really stuck out to me was how hard they all had to work at their own jobs in the time they spent in the service." Porter Pritchard, another freshman said, "I never had a veteran in my family or never was close with any. When the veterans came and spoke, it gave me a more informed and empathetic perspective. I found it very entertaining to hear all the great relationships they made in all the different branches."

Veterans truly enjoyed their experience interacting and speaking with the students as well! Returning Veteran, Dustin Mansour, a medically retired Army Sergeant who served a few tours in Iraq wrote, "I truly love that Connie Beson-Steger has invited me back to speak to students at Midland High School for the past 4-5 years. It is an honor to talk to the future of our country about what it means to be a veteran of this country." Mason Weaver, a senior football player who stopped during hallway marching to shake all the veterans hands individually, summed it up best. "I appreciated getting to meet all the veterans here at school today who sacrificed so much for love of this country."

Guest Veterans were MHS family members, friends, and members of our MPS Community. Thank you to the following Veterans: Jimmey Sequin, Edward Reder, Todd Diederich, Brianna Mcgillen, Charles Murphy, Josh Rutledge, Leslie Novak, Dustin Mansour, Jeff Teft, Owen Mohr, Rocky Maldonado, Fred Honorkamp, Dave Salogar, and MacKenzie Kirkman.

Many thanks to the Chemic Team of Teachers who made this event possible, the ALL-In Fund for helping sponsor, Chartwell Food Service for providing Lunch, and the many parent donors who provided baked goods and decorated cookies for our Vets! #ChemicPride #THANKYOUVETS!

Congratulations to the teams from Dow High and Midland High that were selected to advance in the A. H. Nickless Innovation Award competition!
