Request from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments of Nigeria for the repatriation of 97 artefacts taken during the Benin Punitive Expedition

In accordance with the procedure for dealing with repatriation claims set out in the University’s Procedures for claims for the Return of Cultural Objects, the Visitors of the Pitt Rivers Museum and those of the Ashmolean Museum have considered a claim from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments of Nigeria for the repatriation of 97 objects. The Visitors are recommending that Council agree to the return of the items in question, and invite comments from interested parties.

Any comments received will be considered by Council in reaching a final decision. The dossier of the case for consultation may be consulted on application to Marina de Alarcón, Curator and Head of Collections, Pitt Rivers Museum, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PP (email: marina.dealarcon@prm.ox.ac.uk; tel: (01865) (2)70930).

Any submission regarding the Visitors’ recommendation should also be sent to Marina de Alarcón by 6 April.
