The name of my element is Krypton and its symbol is Kr. Krypton was discovered on May 30, 1898 when an English chemist by the name of Sir William Ramsay was studying liquified air. Trace amounts of liquid krypton remained once the more volatile parts of liquid air had boiled away. (http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ele036.html) The name Krypton is derived from greek. It stems for the greek word kryptos which means hidden. (http://www.encyclopedia.com/science-and-technology/chemistry/compounds-and-elements/krypton)
The high cost of obtaining Krypton gives it few practical uses. Three major uses of Krypton are in photographic flashes in high speed photography, some fluorescent light bulbs, and in luminous signa that glow greenish-yellow light. (http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ele036.html)
- Unlike the rest of the noble gasses, Krypton does make some compounds. The most common is colorless, solid Krypton difluoride (KrF2).
- Krypton was discovered partially on accident. A lighter element to fill the gap between argon and helium was being looked for but at the end of the expiriement all that was left was a heavy gas sample. In this sample an element heavier than argon was found.
