What is this community guide about?
Our community guide is about the typical meals and shops in our neighborhood, Ferreries in Tortosa (a town 200 km away from Barcelona). It’s about the acces to food in our community. There are quite a few places that sell food in this community, and we've chosen some of them to show the different options.
Here you will find: maps, photos and a lot of information.
Food Environment Map
The area that we researched was Ferreries, which is a neighborhood of Tortosa. There are 33.439 inhabitants in the city of Tortosa. The surface is 218.51 km and altitude is 12 meters above the sea level. This map shows the shops where we can buy healthy foods. There are foods from different cultures. The map includes descriptions and photos from our food community.
Cost:
You can notice price differences of the foods. Buying meat is more expensive than buying junk food, that is why people eat food which is not so healthy.
Unhealthy foods are cheaper than healthy ones. For example, a doughnut costs a euro and the salmon costs 8 euros per kg. Usually nutritious foods are more expensive, but it depends on the shop you buy them, because of this reason people eat more unhealthy food than healthy ones.
Accessibility:
There are places that have great accessibility for people in wheelchairs through the ramps, and others don’t.
Most stores do not have a car park, so accessibility is not good.
Accessibility is bad because the stores are located on narrow streets, and it is difficult to park there. Also, blind and wheelchair-bound people cannot enter without the help of other people because most shops have steps.
Animals are not allowed.
Options:
In many places, there isn’t much healthy food, and it is more expensive than nutritious food.
If you are from another culture, it is more difficult to find specific cultural food because most shops don’t have food for all cultures, even though in the city there are lots of cultures and religions.
In all shops, you can get healthy and unhealthy options, but there are more unhealthy options than healthy ones.
Some unhealthy foods options are: croquettes, chips, burgers, french fries, kebab / durum, pizzas, doughnuts, hot expert, nougat, onion rings...
Ideas to improve food security:
In our community there are many shops to buy food, but some of them should improve a bit. For example, sometimes, the people who drive can't go shopping because there aren't parking stations for cars.
Also, there is a lot more junk food than healthy food, and we have to change this if we want to get healthier food habits. A thing that we could do is to stop buying junk food because then big businesses will notice about the change, and they’ll stop producing unhealthy food. Another solution could be that the companies who sell vegetables and fruits don’t use chemicals to produce them. Finally, city leaders could raise prices of plastic, and the companies should pack the food with other sustainable materials such as paper or cardboard.
