Summary: For my final design project, I decided to adopt the Monterey County Family Justice Center. For my first design, I created a family in the shape of a heart. I knew I wanted to incorporate a design of a family or children to represent inclusivity as well as showing that it is a center for families. I decided to choose a heart for the overall shape because hearts are known to represent affection and love. In the second design, I created a circular logo of hands holding a dandelion. I wanted to incorporate dandelions into my design because they have many positive meanings and symbolize growth, happiness, hope and healing. When looking at these logos, I want people, especially survivors, to feel a sense of calmness and unity and know that they are accepted. When deciding my color palette for the logos, I took the client's comments into consideration and kept the purple color scheme since the majority of family and health centers are based on the color purple. For the typography, I came up with two choices. The first logo has more of a legible and clean look to it while the second logo has more of a unique take. I did some research and remembered that the client mentioned that they plan to open the first center in King City so I included the city in the name, however, the location can change for other future centers. For example, I changed the location to Monterey County for the website since it would most likely be one site for all locations in Monterey.

Appraisal: I was able to incorporate the different concepts and designs I learned throughout the semester and create this final project for the Monterey County Family Justice Center. I would say this was definitely the most challenging assignment due to the process, however, I did enjoy the process of creating and designing for an organization.

Typography Posters

Final Posters/Iterations

Summary: For my poster designs, I used the typefaces, Filson Pro and Montserrat. Filson Pro was designed by Olivier Gourvat in 2014. This typeface is a geometric sans serif family with versatility in mind and contains 16 styles ranging from Thin to Black Italic. I chose this font for my first design because I wanted something that was bold, but not too serious and I thought it went well with the design layout. Montserrat is also a geometric sans serif typeface that contains 18 styles and 9 weights. It was designed by Julieta Ulanovsky in 2010 and released in 2011. Her inspiration came from the old posters and signs from the traditional Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires where she lives. She wanted to design a typeface that rescues the beauty of urban typography that emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. I wanted to find another type that was simple and had font weights that were on the bold side to create the wavy 3D effect so I decided to choose this font for my second design.

Appraisal: For this assignment, I really enjoyed experimenting with different typefaces and fonts as well as creating 3D effects with the text. The main concepts that were incorporated into these posters were hierarchy and balance.

Business Cards

Business Card II

Summary: I went for a clean and simple look when designing my business cards. I was able to play around with the different fonts and weights as well as the spacing between letters to see which would give more emphasis on certain elements on the business cards and whether or not a wide or tight kerning would be more appealing to the eye.

Appraisal: From this assignment, I was able to have a better understanding of typography and the different principles that support typography in design compositions such as hierarchy, alignment, balance, etc.

Album Cover

Black and White Album Iteration I
Black and White Album Iteration II
Album Cover Color Iterations

Summary: For the album cover assignment, I decided to create an album cover for the song, "ceilings," by Lizzie McAlpine. The song is mainly about daydreaming and fantasizing love. I used lyrics from the song to create the compositions where you can see the singer and her significant other are in a car. The backgrounds and colors support the mood of the song and I used typography to support the concept.

Appraisal: After hearing some feedback from my classmates, I definitely agree that there could be some improvements in the design. I'm still happy with the outcome of these design compositions, however the changes would definitely improve them. Overall, there is still balance within the designs and a clear idea of what the concept is about.
