Term 2a, week 4

This week, the whole school were lucky enough to be visited by some music students from Newcastle College.

We listened to them play a variety of musical instruments.

It was a great opportunity for us to listen to some live music.

Also this week, Year 5 and 6 were visited by Byron who came to discuss his experiences of how knife crime has affected his life.

His presentation was called the JJ Effect and was named after his brother who lost his life to knife crime.

The children listened and responded well to the issues which were discussed and shared....some of this was tough to listen to at some points!

After Byron’s session, we discussed the issue further and placed it into context for them. They dealt with this in a very mature manner.

In Computing, this week saw the first of our Girls v Boys STEAM challenges....The Classic Catapult Challenge.

We got into our groups and followed the instructions to build a catapult. We then had a few practise runs and made slight tweaks to our designs in order to improve them.

Taneem and Macey look less than impressed with theirs!

We kept a photo and video log of what we did.

Finally the session ended with the competition- which group could score the most points on the target board?

In the lead are ‘The Lads’ with 300 points closely followed by ‘The Pretty Girls’.

Who will win next week’s challenge?

Finally this week, we followed on from some of our work in Geography about lines of latitude and longitude.

We looked at the Prime Meridian line of longitude and how this creates time zones.

Using a map of the time zones and Greenwich Mean Time, we calculated the times in different parts of the world.
