Distance Education & Instructional Technology committee (DEITC) Newsletter April 2021

Graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Educational Technology article was published in the newspaper and showcased in the TAMIU Trailblazer News Bulletin. Read the article from Trailblazer's. C&I in Ed Tech Program Director, Dr. Cynthia Piña, hopes this articles gets traction to motivate teachers and other members of the local schools districts to enroll in the C&I Ed Tech graduate program.

The eLearning Team continues to assist faculty through the QM course development process for courses being taught online. Dr. Mitchell is requiring that any online class from Spring 2021 and beyond must be QM-certified. Faculty must commit to developing for QM, be QM trained, and commit to getting their course QM-certified. Per Deans' Council Notes, if a summer course could not be developed for online delivery on time, it can either be converted to Flex or canceled. Chairs should be checking that courses are QM-certified, in development with the eLearning team, or have a contract before putting the course for online delivery. A great majority of graduate courses have already been QM-certified or developed for online delivery because of the standing agreement with Academic Partnerships.

For an overview of the course development process, visit our Development Process of Distance Education Courses page.

Plagiarism Prevention

The goal is to come up with a module for plagiarism prevention that can be implemented in Blackboard courses per the choice of the faculty member. Dr. Mitchell is not mandating, rather, highly encouraging faculty to assign it to their students as a reminder on maintaining Academic Integrity in their academic career.

Resources from different University departments were gathered and presented for the Plagiarism Prevention/Academic Integrity module. Committee will review each resource/module presented and will select the one resource that is best or customize a module with a couple of options that can work together. All modules will be able to be integrated with Blackboard, so that it may be seamless and easy to navigate for the students. Current options include:

  • Blackboard Online Orientation
  • Student Conduct and Community Engagement (SCCE)
  • University College - targets freshman
  • Library's Credo software
  • Hoonuit videos

As these resources are being vetted and researched on, two additions have already been implemented within Blackboard, which include:

  • TAMIU Honor Pledge added in Blackboard's My Institution entry page.
  • Updated "Acknowledgement of Syllabus and Policies" in Blackboard course templates.

DEITC Goal #4

Maintain and expand collaborative service efforts with regional school districts and institutions of higher education.

For the past 10 years, OIT's eLearning team has spearheaded events that train, expand, and promote the use of technology in education. There have been two major events: Distance Ed week, which is typically held annually in November, and the LIB TECH conference held in late summer. eLearning will continue to bring in events that promote quality in technology for our TAMIU faculty and local and regional school districts. Committee members are welcome to make suggestion on event ideas or financial resources that may help.

Dr. Cynthia Piña, TCEA Area 1 Director, is looking for keynote speakers to present on diversity, inclusion and equity with a focus on the educational technology field.
