Staples girls' volleyball suffers tough loss against Greenwich Story and photos By Marina engler '21

The Staples girls’ volleyball team lost a tough game against the undefeated Greenwich Cardinals on Oct. 3.

Going into the game, the Wreckers knew that a challenge lay ahead of them as Greenwich held a strong 6-0 record against FCIAC teams so far this year. Staples came into the game with a 3-3 record against FCIAC teams.

“We practiced a lot on receiving serves because we knew they would have a strong [serve] every time,” Linnea Jagenberg ’21 said.

All three sets began with Staples coming out strong and winning the first few points. However, the Cardinals came back to retaliate and defend their reputation for having one of the strongest offenses in the FCIAC, ultimately winning each set.

“I thought we played really well, we tried really hard and we gave it our full effort. I think we could have worked better on our offense and we could have really tried to fix our defense,” Elle Videler ’21 said.

The third set opened with excellent defensive plays from both sides. Staples proved to be resilient and pulled ahead early on, gaining a slight 8-7 lead.

However, Greenwhich prevailed and pulled ahead of the Wreckers to win the third and final set with a final score of 25-16.
The Wreckers look to bounce back Oct. 15 at 5:30 pm, at home against Stamford.
