Exciting News from around the District!

Mr. Dave McPeak's Midland High US History Class had the opportunity to meet virtually with Oscar winner Anthony Giacchino, with the help of student Oskar Kecke from Germany, who put Mr. McPeak in touch with the filmmaker. Mr. Giacchino won the 2021 Short Subject Documentary Oscar for his incredibly powerful film Colette. What a great day to be a Chemic!
Erin Evans, mother of Senior Tyler Shapiro, presented to some Midland High seniors on January 26 about what life is like for a modern deployed US soldier. This guest speaker was in coordination with students' study of Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. This novel shares O'Brien's fictionalized accounts of his experiences fighting in the Vietnam War so while studying the book, students are also writing letters to soldiers stationed in Syria & Iraq. We thank Ms. Evans for sharing her time and knowledge - her husband, Ben Evans, has been in the National Guard for 34 years & his tours have sent him all around the world including (most recently) Afghanistan and Syria.
Congratulations to DHS student Saumya Somasi for being named as a candidate in the 2023 United States Presidential Scholars Program based on her perfect score on the ACT. Great job Saumya!
Students in Ms. Reinke's class at the Carpenter Pre-Primary Center were selected by Michigan Construction to win a truckload of books! Thank you Michigan Construction!
Author Johnathan Rand visited Adams Elementary on February 1st to discuss his career and promote the importance of reading and writing to our students. Mr. Rand is the author of dozens of fiction books for children and young adults, including the American Chillers and Michigan Chillers book series. The Atoms were so excited, thank you for visiting, Mr. Rand!
Students at Chestnut Hill and Plymouth Elementaries celebrate 100's day (the 100th day of this school year!) by participating in fun activities and dressing as "100 years old".

Central Park first graders were thrilled to participate in their 7th annual International Day provocation to kick off their Where We Are in Place and Time unit of inquiry. A unit centralized around learning about our own family traditions and influences as well as examining those that are different from ours. This year we were ecstatic to host 13 students from Dow High School, representing 7 countries (Haiti, India, Iran, Italy, Nigeria, China and Latvia) from around the world. Each presentation provided opportunities for students to learn about different cultures and traditions; from making paper lanterns, to sampling homemade Italian pizzelles, to looking at traditional Latvian jewelry and woodworking, and learning about the art of mehndi in India, students experienced oodles of fun in one afternoon!
To celebrate the completion of their 4,000-word Extended Essays in December, forty Dow High IB Diploma Candidates walked the red carpet dressed as their topic! Talk about some creative thinking….Grant Douglas as Franz Ferdinand; Madelynn Herndon as Emily Dickinson; Luke Bonotto as Zeus; Will Fagan as horror literature; Juliana Vargas representing fairytales; and the 7th hour TOK class dressed as their diverse resarch topics. Great job!
