TRINITY COLLEGE ATHLETICS 2021-22 YEAR IN REVIEW

Field hockey led the charge in the fall season. Following an outstanding regular season, the Bantams won three NCAA tournament games to reach their first Final Four since 1998. Senior Caelin Flaherty was named First Team All-American and was one of three Bantams to earn All-NESCAC honors.

Trinity's fall teams returned to full competitive schedules and we safely welcomed fans to campus as well. The NESCAC Presidents allowed for longer preseason windows and out of season practice for the first time in order to reacclimate athletes to the full college sports experience. Trinity football finished with an 8-1 record, the 14th time in the last 19 seasons that the Bantams have finished with 0 or 1 loss on the year.

Trinity College hosted the 2021 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four at Robin L. Sheppard Field in November.

The Field Hockey Final Four drew record attendance and was the first of four NCAA Championships Trinity will host over the next four years (Women's Basketball 2023, Men's Ice Hockey 2024, and Field Hockey 2025).

Senior Tim Lautenbach and junior Travis Martin both earned spots in the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. The men’s team finished 8th of 26 teams at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional.

Bantam fall student athletes returned with a flourish after two years away, earning 14 All-NESCAC honors.

Three coaches achieved milestones as well. Anne Parmenter (field hockey) earned her 300th career coaching victory, Jeff Devanney (football) earned his 100th coaching victory, and James Cosgrove (men's basketball) earned his 400th career win.

Three student athletes were named President's Fellows for outstanding achievement within their major: Bailey McKeon (Women’s Ice Hockey) - Philosophy, John Stone (Women’s Rowing) – Classical Studies, and Nadiia Usenko (Women’s Squash) – Language & Culture Studies.

Seven student athletes were named Dean's Scholars for the class of 2024: Maria Figueroa (Women’s Swimming & Diving), Alex Hevko (Women’s Golf), Sophia Jones (Women’s Track & Field), Jan-Peter Kaufmann (Football), Molly King (Field Hockey), Cate Kneebone (Women’s Track & Field), and Maggie O’Neil (Women’s Basketball).

The 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame class was inducted on October 1. The honorees were: Ken Abere ’86, Bill Doyle ’85, Christine (Smith) Collins ’91, Dea Fredrick-Cristea ’84, former Athletic Director Richard Hazelton, Karen (Rodgers) Miller ’85, former Basketball coach Stan Ogrodnik and Charlie Sticka ’56.

The 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame class was inducted on September 17. The honorees were: Ron Duckett ’74, Yolanda Flamino ’99, Peter Graves ’07, Alec Guild ’61, Isabel Iwachiw ’10, former Athletic Director Karl Kurth (posthumous), Claire Slaughter Joyce ’86, and Jay Williamson ’89.

The brand new Tansill Muldoon Stadium at Jessee Miller and Sheppard Fields opened this fall. This project was made possible by the generosity of many donors, most notably Douglas T. ’61 and Dhuanne S. Tansill P'91, ’96, Arthur F. ’88 and Peyton Tansill ’91 Muldoon and Luke'96 and Sally'98 Tansill. This facility will support field hockey, football, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's and women's track and field.

This winter, women's basketball earned its first ever regular season crown and top-seed in the NESCAC tournament, with coach Emily Garner winning conference Coach of the Year honors and senior Bailey Hyland taking home Defensive Player of the Year.

The Bantams celebrated three NESCAC championships this winter, with men's ice hockey and men's and women's squash all taking home their respective conference trophies. Each team also boasted their sport's NESCAC player of the year: Lucas Michaud '22 (Men's Ice Hockey), Mohamed Sharaf '24 (Men's Squash), and Malak Moustafa '25 (Women's Squash).

Trinity sent eight athletes to the indoor Track & Field Nationals in the winter, and three to the spring Nationals. Travis Martin '23 (800 meters) and Ethan Wilkie '24 (shot put) earned All-American honors in the winter, and Gabby Grattan '24 (high jump) took home All-American accolades in the spring.

In the spring, Men's Rowing enjoyed national rankings throughout the season and earned an invitation to the inaugural Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Division III National Championship Regatta in June, where the squad earned a bronze medal after a hard fought, fast race.

Softball took home several NESCAC post-season awards this spring, with first-year infielder Taylor Mikolajczak securing Rookie of the Year and First-Team honors, and head coach Molly Rathbun winning Coach of the Year.

Through the 2021-22 school year, we had 46 Bantams earn all-conference accolades and 12 earn All-American honors. Additionally, we had 222 student athletes earn all-academic recognition during the year.

We also had 10 teams experience national and regional recognition through the year. Five teams finished their seasons in the top ten nationally: Women's Squash, 3rd, Field Hockey, 3rd, Men's Rowing, 3rd, Men's Squash, 5th, and Men's Ice Hockey, 9th. In national rankings, two more teams finished the season among the top 25: Women's Rowing, 6th, and Women's Lacrosse, 21st.

The upcoming academic year promises more exciting achievements by Bantam student athletes and teams. We will also continue to move forward on a number of capital projects that will impact not only varsity athletes, but all Trinity students. However, none of this would be possible without the support we receive from Bantams all over the world. As we continue to focus on our growth and development, our community of alumni and friends allows us to reach our goals.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, we will celebrate both the college's bicentennial and the 50th anniversary of Title IX. While we look back on the progress we have made both as an institution and in athletics, we acknowledge that our work is not done, and we look forward to our continued advancements toward an equitable experience for all. You can see more about our Title IX initiatives here.
