CRA Newsletter 10.12.2021 Half Term 2 - DECember 10th 2021

Principal's Update

We have had our GCSE Drama performances this week. It was lovely to see how much the students have grown in confidence and skill under Miss Elsby’s direction.

Congratulations to those students, and let’s hope the written papers go as well as the practical element.

It was great that our football team were successful in their football fixture against West Grantham Academy with a final score of 4-2. Congratulations to those who played.

We are looking forward to next week where we hope students will enjoy a number of Christmas events including the Santa run, the Christmas House party/ competitions, held in key stages, the Christmas lunch and the awards assembly.

There has been a lot of absence this week with only one student absence due to COVID, we hope that all students can join us next week for the Christmas festivities.

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Jones - Principal

Lockdown Process

As part of our critical incident planning, we are going to rehearse our lockdown process on December 17th.

This is not a lockdown linked to COVID but is in the event of having an intruder on site for example.

This will take place during the day on December 17th. Whilst students will be informed of the date, they will not be told the time so we can plan in an element of surprise. Students will be informed about the warning signal which will indicate the lock down is to be implemented and staff will guide students through the procedures in assembly and then as part of the rehearsal.

We are not expecting a critical incident, but just want to ensure we are prepared if such an event occurred.

If you have any questions please contact the academy via the enquiries@charlesreadacademy.co.uk.

Mrs Jones - Principal

Home Lateral Flow Testing

Return to school testing - January 5th 2022

Following Government guidance updated at the start of December, the Department for Education, based on and the NHS advice, have requested all secondary schools to perform lateral flow testing with students when they return in January 2022.

On this occasion we are only required to test once on the return, every ear group will be tested on Wednesday 5th January, and again we will only test those students we have consent for.

CONSENT

Where you have previously provided or denied consent for your child, we will continue to abide by your wishes. However, if you would like to change your consent or have never previously consented, such as students who have joined us since September 2021, we would ask you to complete this simple Google Form below by January 2nd at the latest.

If in doubt, or if your contact details have changed, then please complete the form again and we will update your wishes.

TEST SITE PROCESS

As with previous testing processes we will bring ALL students in a year or tutor group to the test centre at their allotted time and filter off those without consent to the waiting area. Those without consent will be with those students being tested but will not be called for a test themselves.

We will also be using the “nasal only” tests this time, so that may help allay the anxieties of a few students too who cannot accommodate the throat swabs.

If you have consented to testing and complete a test with your child in the preceding 24 hours, we will still call them for testing, as this ensures that on their return to school the students are still negative.

RISK ASSESSMENT

A copy of the updated risk assessment will be available on the school website ahead of the return to school when the latest guidance has been updated post-Christmas and all risks factored in.

A copy of this letter can be found on the website by clicking here.

Routine weekly testing

When you complete lateral flow tests at home on a Sunday and Wednesday evening, please report the results via these links to both the NHS and also CRA.

If you require further kits, students can collect these from reception.

Did you know that parents and support bubbles of school children, as well as anyone who has to leave home to go to work, can now get rapid Covid-19 tests twice a week. Order yours now here.

Further guidance from the Government and Department of Education in respect of home testing can be found below:

A copy of the risk assessment and privacy policy relating to Lateral Flow Testing can be found on the CRA website.

Homework

As an academy we have made a great start to our new homework policy introduced this Autumn Term. Each student who has completed all pieces of Prep homework will have accumulated approximately 30hours of self- regulated learning this term. The homework policy not only supports students to develop self-regulation which is a fundamental skill needed in the work place and our personal lives but also a student’s long term memory of core knowledge. We ask you to discuss homework with your children over the Christmas holidays and the importance and benefits of its completion.

Those students who do not complete their Prep Homework (KS3-4) and/ or Additional homework (KS4) or who do not meet the expectations of the homework will receive a Prep Detention and will be informed during Roll Call by their Tutor. Two Prep Detentions in one week will result in an MCAS home and a phone call from the students Tutor. Three Prep Detentions in one week will result in an MCAS home and a day in IE. Please find the Homework Policy here as a reminder of the responsibilities from all parties. Please find here the instructional video which demonstrates how to complete the Prep Homework and the expectations.

All students will not be required to complete any homework over the Christmas holidays and will therefore receive their new Spring Term packs on Wednesday 5th January. Tutors will expect to see the first Prep Homework on Thursday 6th January during Roll Call from all students in KS3 and Yr10 students. Yr11 students will be revising for their Touchstone assessments and their first prep homework is expected on Monday 17th January during Roll Call. The online homework table will be available from Tuesday 4th January. Responding to some feedback from parents/carers and students we will also be issuing all students with a printed version of the homework table alongside their packs.

Thank you for your continued support with the homework policy.

A short video on homework expectations can be found on the CRA website or by clicking below:

Please talk to your child about this new approach to homework and the consequences if they don’t complete it or don’t complete it to a satisfactory standard.

Mrs Cooper - Whole School Teaching & Learning Lead

Humanities- Travel & Tourism:

Yr11 students will be sitting their external exam Component 2: Influences on Global Travel and Tourism February 2022. Students should be revising from now until the exam using their Knowledge Organiser and the Prep Homework set. Students should also try to spend more time revising from the knowledge organiser using activities such as:

  • Flash cards of key terms
  • Mind map for each of the 3 parts (A, B, C)
  • Self-quizzing

Mrs Cooper - Head of Humanities

CRA Values

On 2nd December we had our first enrichment drop down day this academic year and Year 7 visited the University of Nottingham for an ASPIRATIONAL visit to a further education establishment.

The students had met with university staff the week before at CRA, taking part in an acclimatisation session. During the day at the university the students got to experience university life, touring the campus and student areas, seeing the accommodation and lecture halls, and working on a project to design their own university.

Before the trip 88% of our Year 7 cohort had never visited a university and after the trip 86% expressed that they would like to go to university in the future.

Miss King - Assistant Principal

Uniform expectations

It is vital that we ensure everyone is adhering to the Academy Uniform Policy - details of which can be found here.

Students without a medical note will go into IE for incorrect uniform.

Outdoor coats

Outdoor coats can be worn during breaks and before and after school, but should not be worn when walking inside the academy. May we also remind you that hoodies are not appropriate, and shouldn’t be worn as a replacement for an outdoor coat.

Face Masks

Masks are recommended to be worn on all school transport, during transitions between lessons and in communal indoor spaces. Please ensure you have a spare mask just in case it requires changing throughout the day. We appreciate that communication whilst wearing a mask can be tricky, so please see the poster below for tips on effective communication whilst wearing a mask.

Masks should be blue or black and plain and worn at all times whilst inside the school buildings.

Parent Governor Vacancies

Charles Read Academy are now looking for two parent governors.

The role of parent governor is an important one. School governors play an important role in supporting the school. They can influence the strategic vision and direction and hold the senior leadership team to account.

Why become a school governor?

Benefits include:

  • Developing your professional skills and experience such as strategic planning, and team working, both of which are valued by employers and can assist your own career development
  • Building relationships and networks in your locality
  • Supporting children and young people in your community.

There is one meeting every half term. The meetings usually last approximately an hour and a half and can be accessed via Teams if coming into school is too difficult due to transport or child care issues.

We would love to hear from you if you are interested in this role by completing your declaration of interest in the Governor election procedure below:

Careers' Corner

Career's Fair - December 2021

Thursday 2nd December saw Charles Read Academy partner with local organisations and businesses to host a Careers Fair in school, providing students with an opportunity to learn more about their career pathways for the future.

Year 8 to 11 students were given the opportunity to meet employers, further education organisations and apprenticeship providers, and talk about their routes into a variety of sectors.

The fair offered pupils the chance to explore a wide range of different options, including education, NHS, food preparation, engineering, sport and the military.

Representatives from major organisations such as NCS, Peterborough United, Bakkavor, NHS, Stamford College and the RAF were on hand to inform students about their own career paths and give them advice on their next steps after leaving school.

Year 11 student, Ashton said “The Careers fair was a real eye opener and a great source of knowledge for all year groups. The visitors were very knowledgeable and provided us with leaflets and brochures to aid our understanding. The event was well worth it and I would enjoy taking part in the experience again.”

Mrs Dexter, Careers Support said:

The event was extremely successful, with positive feedback from both visitors and students. We would like to say a big thank you to all of those who attended for their time and invaluable advice.

The year 7 students were taken to Nottingham University, so that they could experience university life for a day. They had previously received an input from the university Outreach officer so they knew what to expect and could appreciate why university might be the right choice for them.

Charles Read Academy work closely with external partners and contacts to introduce students to careers and work experience. Numerous additional events will be hosted, including, Rotary Mock interviews, Careers assemblies and work experience for Year 10 & 11 students.

Student Takeover - 6pm on Thursday 16th December

  • Games Design (Art & Technology)
  • Music (Performance & Production)
  • Media (Film, Video & Photography)
  • Event Production
  • ESports

We’re letting our students takeover to shed some light on what it’s like to study on a course with us at Access Creative College. They’ll be discussing why they chose ACC, what they do on their creative courses, and at what point they decided to apply to study with us.

There will be a Q&A at the end of the event, with our students on hand to answer any questions about our courses. The event will be taking place virtually on Zoom.

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

STEM Careers

This week a number of students have had real-world careers input from guest speakers over TEAMs.

Jennifer Veitch spoke to a group of Year 7 students about her role as a chemical engineer working with crude oil, on a platform 100 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, to create sustainable plastics. The students were able to ask lots of questions about how she uses science in her job (including the periodic table), the environmental impact of manufacturing and recycling plastics and what she does day to day.

Alix Wilcox spoke to a group of aspirational Year 10 students about how her degree in theoretical physics led to a leading role in cybersecurity and software engineering. She taught us about coding and how she designs software, as well as letting us know, that just like many jobs, there are plenty of meetings and admin! Both speakers have varied and unusual routes into their current jobs and it was good for students to see different career pathways.

What came through from both speakers is their passion for their careers and how much they enjoy their jobs – many students picked up on this and commented on how everyone they had spoken to about careers lately seemed to like what they did. This is one of the big messages coming through – you might not know what you want to do as a career today, but consider what your interests, likes and dislikes are and start to investigate the many opportunities available.

New Year Cup – COMING SOON

Be part of the CRA Virtual Tour of America as we take on ‘Route 66’ by representing CRA in the New Year Cup.

We are extremely excited to be taking part in the first ever DRET New Year Cup, which will see staff and students across the trust represent their respective academies throughout January (33 schools in total).

This will follow the same format as the successful Lockdown Cup from earlier this year where we as the smallest secondary academy in the trust finished 4th overall. Can we better that this time around?

Two Cups will be awarded to the school which covers the highest number of kilometres during the month by either cycling, walking or running, and the school which covers the largest average km per head. Medals will also be awarded to the highest individual pupils and staff members for walking, running and cycling.

To enter, you can start submitting your screenshots from 1st January by simply emailing housechampionship@charlesreadacademy.co.uk . All you need to include in the email is (Try to send in entries on the day of the exercise being completed).

  • Name:
  • Date of exercise:
  • Academy:
  • Pupil / Staff:
  • Walk / Run / Cycle:
  • Distance in KM’s:

This is also a house competition with a pot of 250 points on offer for the house covering the furthest distance and highest number of participating students and staff.

Each submission will add to our overall school total and we will share our progress across Route 66, visiting some hot spots and sights along the way! To complete route 66 as a school we need to complete a distance of 3,862km, roughly 13km per person across the month – this is more than achievable if we all play our part.

Get involved and support CRA and your house.

Competition is open from Saturday January 1st and will close at the end of the day on Monday 31st January.

Good Luck.

CRA Christmas Jumper Day – Thursday 16th December

On Thursday, staff and students will come together to celebrate the house Christmas party. One of the competitions taking place throughout the day is ‘Best Christmas Jumper’ where we are encouraging all staff and students to come to school wearing their Christmas jumpers. A £1 donation will be made to Save the Children charity which has been included in the price of the Christmas Party ticket, therefore there is no further money needed to be paid. Students are however still required to wear there school uniform but can wear a Christmas jumper over shirts and ties.

Throughout the Christmas Party there will also be a number of fun filled Christmas games and prize draws for students to look forward to.

KS4 and KS3 house party’s will run at separate times throughout the afternoon in the light of recent COVID guidelines, ensuring their enough sufficient space for each tutor group.

DRET Santa Run

The DRET Santa Run is also taking place on Thursday, in support of the DRET Inspiration Fund. We are proud of our CRA Community who have already raised over £2000 with almost 100 participants signed up to take part – this is a fantastic achievement and well done to everyone who has taken time to fundraise for this event.

Students are encouraged to take part in their PE Kits and have the option to wear a Christmas Jumper OR Santa run T Shirt if raised £8 or more.

Keep an eye out for updates throughout the day on the academies social media platforms.

Table Talk

During the 4th PSHCE 50-minute session this academic year, we spend the time talking to our students about self-regulation and the importance for this for their learning and for their future.

We would like you to discuss the quote by Clint Eastwood and why self-respect and self-discipline result in real power over your own life.

Mental Health Intent

We are currently working on our Mental Health intent and would be interested to hear any feedback on this. Please see the statement in the attachment below.

Vapes

We have unfortunately had a succession of students who have been found to have vapes on their person, having been using them at the bus stop and on the school transport.

Clearly it is illegal to purchase vapes or smoking paraphernalia under the age of 18, but aside from this, is it against our school rules. Anything connected to smoking is a banned item and students found with any paraphernalia will receive a fixed term exclusion.

We do this for the safety of all concerned. I hope you can support us in talking to your child about this matter.

Word of the Week

(Greek word root)

Pan: all, every

  • Panorama - an unbroken view of the whole region surrounding an observer.
  • Pandemic - (of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world.
  • Pansexual - not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity.

Miss Brealey - Head of English Faculty

Year 11 Focus

This week we will continue to explore the concept of dual coding by sharing 5 ways in which students can use dual coding as part of their revisions process.

Drawings

This does what it says on the tin: we’re talking about simply drawing pictures. Research suggests that creating a drawing from a piece of information requires you to elaborate on its meaning. You have to really consider the information to decipher how best to represent it, create the necessary motor movements with a pencil, and use pictorial processing to inspect your drawing once it’s finished. This deeper processing helps to cement the information into long-term memory.

Many students will be quick to dismiss this strategy because they “can’t draw”. The fact is, there’s no need to be an artist - the most important thing is that your drawings have meaning. As long as they represent the information you need to remember, even if this is only meaningful to you, drawings are a great way to boost student learning.

Graphic organisers

A graphic organiser is a way to organise information (both words and pictures) according to the relationships between different concepts.

There are loads of different types of graphic organisers, all corresponding to different ways of thinking: mind maps and tree diagrams organise information by “chunking” it into related groups; Venn diagrams organise information through comparing its similarities and differences; flowcharts organise information as it occurs within a sequence; other graphic organisers show information with cause-and-effect relationships.

If you need some inspiration.

Diagrams

Diagrams are perfect for learning and revising complex concepts or processes that need breaking down to understand. They can represent a lot of information within a relatively small space, compared to writing it all out in one long passage, making difficult concepts easier to read and get to grips with. Here are several ways you can make your diagram dual coding more effective:

  • Make use of signaling. This means drawing attention to the most important aspects of the diagram, such as key words. You could do so by highlighting, underlining, putting writing in bold, using arrows, circling… To maximise the impact of these techniques, use them sparingly.
  • Place text within diagrams rather than around the outside. For example, if your diagram is simply an annotated picture, have the labels within the picture rather than around it or in a key. It’s much easier to process the words and pictures when they’re right next to each other, than if you have to keep switching your attention back and forth. This is called the spatial contiguity principle.
  • One creative option is to leave diagram labels blank. You can then re-visit your diagram at a later date to test yourself on filling in the labels. This combines dual coding with two other extremely effective revision strategies that you should know about, retrieval practice and spacing.

Posters

Posters are great for combining writing, pictures, and diagrams all within one page of information. They can be used to present all the most important information you know on a specific topic, for example. To ensure you can easily learn and revise from your poster, here are some key tips:

  • Use hierarchy - Be sure to include titles and subtitles, and to emphasise these with larger writing or writing in bold. This not only make the poster easier to read, but also gives the information an element of order to help you understand it better.
  • Be consistent - Consistency of organisation, colour coding, fonts, and other styling aspects will all help to make your poster more readable.
  • Use contrast - Writing large chunks of text in one colour or highlighting everything on your poster doesn’t make anything stand out. Instead, use one or two key colours to create contrast and allow key information to stand out. The more sparsely you use colour, the more effective it will be in helping you to remember the key bits of information. It’s all about that 4th principle: restraint.

Timelines

For any information that happens in a particular order or sequence, timelines should be a go-to. The same rules apply: collect the information you need to know, cut irrelevant information, chunk information into different sections of time, and put these into an organised sequence, all the time using restraint with colours and text and in general not trying to be too “arty”. As always, less is more.

Football Fixtures

This week we have hosted 4 football fixtures. On Wednesday our Year 11 team came up against St Hugh’s. Our team had a slow start but when they got going they dominated the game. In the end, they won the match 4-2

Year 11's

The goals were scored by Harvey x2, Finlay and Evan C. Evan C was awarded player of the match after an excellent performance which included a goal from outside the box.

Then on Thursday we hosted 3 fixtures against Barnes Wallis Academy, another DRET academy. Year 7, 8 and 9 all played 7-a-side matches against them under the lights.

Year 8's

They proved to be a tough opponent for our teams. Our Year 7 and 8 teams both suffered losses but the Year 9’s held them to a draw.

Year 9's

It was great to see 25 of our students playing football fixtures. It was a great afternoon of sport.

Year 7's

It was great to see 25 of our students playing football fixtures. It was a great afternoon of sport.

Next week we look forward to hosting a Year 10 match against Barnes Wallis Academy.

Updated Transport Policy

Transport provision for the academic year ahead is finalised in July.

Should a student move house that impacts on the transportation requirements (either to a DRET service from another DRET or LCC service) after the arrangements have been agreed between DRET and the transport providers; then places on a revised service will be subject to availability.

Should places not be available on the preferred service then either parents would make their own arrangements, or an alternative will be offered in the same town where possible, even though this may not offer the most convenient stops for the student.

At present we have a waiting list on one of the AC Williams Grantham services and are having to place students on the other Blands Grantham service

We appreciate this may cause some additional logistical issues for parents, but we cannot accommodate services that are not required at the time of the procurement of transport for the year ahead.
