Morrie says that our culture has a form of brainwashing. The culture tells them that more money, property, or stuff is better. He says that the average person gets confused by all of that, so he doesn't know what really is important anymore. Mitch had looked around Morrie's study to find it the same as it was weeks ago, Charlotte drove the same car, and the TV was the same model. Instead, Morrie says we should devote ourselves to our community around us.
"Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning (Albom 127)."
Morrie teaches Mitch that he doesn't need the latest of anything. Money doesn't really make you happy. Instead, he urges him to spend his time with the people in his community.
