Dakota Download Governor Burgum's Weekly Update - April 17, 2022

Burgum thanks NDDOT, NDHP, NDDES and other agencies for work during major blizzard

Gov. Doug Burgum expressed his gratitude for North Dakota Department of Transportation, Highway Patrol, Department of Emergency Services and other agencies that worked throughout the week to prepare for and provide services during a three-day blizzard that pummeled much of the state, with more than 30 inches of snow reported in some areas.

Record-breaking snowfall and high winds forced the closure of the Capitol and other state facilities in the Bismarck area from midday Tuesday through Thursday. State agency satellite offices in cities across much of the state also were closed to in-person traffic as conditions made roads impassable and prompted no-travel advisories.

“Team member safety is our top priority. We also have a duty and responsibility to continue serving the public,” Burgum said as he announced closures Tuesday. “We’re grateful to those who continue to provide essential state services in challenging conditions for the safety and well-being of our citizens, including the North Dakota Department of Transportation and Highway Patrol members working out in these harsh conditions as they have done throughout this long winter.”

State offices, which were closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday, will reopen Monday.

The Highway Patrol reported that one of its troopers, along with a Department of Transportation snowplow operator, made a blood supply run from Minot to Bottineau early Wednesday morning. Troopers are occasionally requested to transport blood from one location to another location where supplies are low.

Veterans welcomed home from inaugural Western North Dakota Honor Flight

Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford joined hundreds of community members, fellow elected officials and active and retired military members on Monday at the Bismarck Airport to welcome home more than 90 veterans who participated in the first-ever Western North Dakota Honor Flight to visit war memorials and other monuments in Washington, D.C.

"Our military veterans deserve our endless gratitude for their incredible service and sacrifice. Deepest thanks to these veterans for defending our freedom, and to the many volunteers behind the inaugural Western North Dakota Honor Flight for making this well-deserved trip happen," Sanford said. "Whether it’s the North Dakota National Guard members greeting them in D.C. or the hundreds of flag-waving community members showing their support at the Bismarck Airport tonight, our military members can always count on a proper North Dakota welcome."

Western North Dakota Honor Flight was created to honor America’s veterans by providing them with free travel to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their war memorials. For more information about the nonprofit organization, click the button below.
