Worldreader has partnered with Barefoot College to bring our digital reading program to night schools just like this one. Sadly, this is an issue that impacts many of India's under-served communities.
Many of them are forced to grow up too fast.
Many under-privileged families in rural India cannot bear the opportunity cost of sending their children – especially girls – to study. Instead, children are required to assist with household duties such as looking after the animals and crops, and collecting water for the family. As a result, the children from these rural areas are unable to attend school during regular class hours.
Night schools give them a second chance.
In 1975, Barefoot College understood the problem these children were facing and started the Solar Night Schools Programme. Since then, the program has followed an alternative schooling model that has been extended to many other states of the country, guaranteeing the education of more than 75,000 children that, otherwise, would most probably be excluded from school.
