Veteran to Scholar Boot Camp

At ECU® and nationwide, many military veterans have struggled to transition from military culture to university culture. The first year is the most challenging for this population, who are often non-traditional learners. Whereas student veterans tend to outperform traditional (18 to 22-year-old) students throughout the rest of their academic careers, that first semester can significantly negatively impact their overall GPAs, sense of belonging to a university and anxiety and depression. To better support these students, the Veteran to Scholar Boot Camp was developed. Since 2017, this program has served a small group of incoming veterans as they begin their new life as students.

Beginning in 2020, BSOM partnered with this program as part of its mission to better serve the patients of Eastern North Carolina. Participants from the boot camp go on to serve as discussion co-facilitators to create dialogue with non-veteran medical and pre-med students. Since medical students will be providing care for veterans, it's a great opportunity to develop understanding of those specific needs. Student veterans are also given an opportunity to vocalize the unique needs of veterans to future medical professionals to help guide the field of medicine surrounding veterans. Additionally, medical students develop a better understanding of the discourse around traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. This work was featured in the North Carolina Literary Review, and a peer-reviewed article "Odysseus goes to university: The Veteran to Scholar Boot Camp" was recently published in the Journal of Veteran Studies.

Mentoring Advice Program

2022 - 2023 Cohort

The Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development has kicked off its fourth cohort of the Mentoring Advice Program (MAP) with 8 mentees and 8 mentors. Junior faculty mentees are assigned senior faculty mentors with whom they meet one-one-one at least once a month.

In addition to monthly one-on-ones with their mentor, mentees attend workshops at least once a month between August and May. Each of the workshops is planned around a specific topic with specified learning objectives, and guest speakers/experts deliver the programming. Workshop topics include Research Support, Writing Skills, Team Building, Work-Life Balance, Promotion and Tenure and Teaching and Feedback.

Clockwise from top left: Becky Gilbird, Cierra Buckman, Dr. Sarah Williams, Dr. Dmitri Tumin and Kerry Sewell provide information on simulation, faculty development, library and research resources to the MAP mentees

The 2022 - 2023 cohort will culminate in May with each mentee presenting a research project.

See here for past MAP cohorts.

Dr. Rukiyah Van Dross-Anderson Recipient of Two Prestigious Grants:

National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Cancer Institute (NCI) STTR Grant

A Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) grant was awarded to Dr. Van Dross-Anderson's start-up biotechnology company, Claradele Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in the amount of $398,242.

"The title of the grant is 'Development of a small-molecule immunomodulator for the treatment of melanoma.' The goal of this study is to utilize our patented agent to increase the presence of cancer-killing immune cells in tumors. By doing this, we can make existing therapies more effective without increasing toxicity to the patient."

N.C. Department of Commerce, One NC Small Business Matching STTR/SBIR Grant Program

Dr. Van Dross Anderson was also awarded a Matching Grant in the amount of $75,000. The funding will be utilized to collaborate with NC-based small businesses to execute research required to commercialize products. This grant also creates and funds a new position to support preclinical research studies. This will attract investors and partners thereby facilitating commercialization of the drug. She now has two awarded patents for technology to treat different types of cancer.

SLAM-DUNC SYMPOSIUM

Dr. Srinivas Sriramula &

Dr. Jeffrey Eels

The first symposium for learning about Alzheimer's disease-related medical research at Duke and UNC (SLAM-DUNC) was held June 24 - 25 at Duke University. Over 80 researchers, clinicians and trainees from Duke, UNC, NCCU, UNC-Pembroke and ECU gathered for networking, presentations and poster sessions.

Dr. Srinivas Sriramula and Dr. Jeffery Ells presented their research at the SLAM-DUNC symposium

Pharmacology & Toxicology Assistant Professor Dr. Sriramula and Anatomy and Cell Biology Associate Professor Dr. Jeffery Eels presented a poster titled "Long COVID in K18-hACE2 mice causes persistent brain inflammation and neurocognitive impairment."

The presented results investigated the specific mechanisms responsible for long-term consequences on the brain in an animal model of long COVID. Their data show that the persistent neurocognitive deficits which were observed after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 could increase future risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

ECU will be hosting this collaborative multi-institution event next year. Stay tuned for more info.

Community Building in STEM Event

THRIVE @ ECU

In 2020, ECU was awarded a grant aimed to reduce bias and improve gender equity from the National Science Foundation ADVANCE program.

According to the THRIVE @ ECU webpage,

"ECU addresses biases entrenched in faculty recruitment, hiring, and advancement. By implementing evidence-based strategies, THRIVE will change the institutional culture, build support systems, and change institutional structures to remove barriers and increase accountability. These efforts will empower all ECU women to reach their highest potential and thrive. Although the program targets women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), all members of the campus community will benefit from the grant."

Faculty gathered Friday, September 9th at Brody Commons to network and build partnerships across campus at a Community Building in STEM event sponsored by Brody School of Medicine. This “Coffee & Pastry” event was the fourth event in the Community Building in STEM series introduced by THRIVE @ ECU.

Faculty who attended were able to learn more about various Brody School of Medicine offices and programs, including the following: Brody Women Faculty Committee, Office of Clinical Simulation, VCDI, Department of Academic Affairs, Office of Diversity Affairs, Office of Data Analysis and Strategy, Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and Office of Research and Graduate Studies.

Congratulations, Shayan Nik Akhtar!

Anatomy and Cell BiologyPhD candidate Shayan Nik Akhtar presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference held in San Diego, CA on July 31 to August 4, 2022. Akhtar studies how cell signaling is spatially dysregulated in Alzheimer’s disease brain using antibody technology that pinpoints the functional states of the small G-proteins. These studies, funded by NIH TRA, help define molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease for developing better therapeutic treatment. Click here to read more about Akhtar's poster.

Request for Applications: 2023 Brody Brothers Endowment Grants

About the Brody Brothers Endowment Fund: In conjunction with the support and leadership provided by the Dean of the Brody School of Medicine, the purposes of the Brody Brothers Endowment are as follows: The fund was established to assist with research projects being conducted by the medical school in the areas of cancer, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and other prevalent health problems found in eastern North Carolina. The fund provides supplemental research funding to enhance the medical school’s various initiatives in medicine, related to BSOM’s established mission and vision (for example BSOM’s initiatives in new technology and research). However, the Endowment’s principal and income shall not be used to supplant in whole or in part the medical school or ECU state operating budget with regard to equipment, staff and faculty salaries or supplements, and other items that are typically funded by operating budgets.

Proposals will be reviewed initially by a faculty review committee, and a prioritized list of proposals will be provided to the Stewardship Committee of the Brody Brothers Endowment Fund for final consideration. Proposals should include the medical/scientific significance of the proposed research, the specific aims of the project, the feasibility of collecting sufficient data samples to complete the research within the specific grant term, the potential for future research grants/projects and a proposed budget and justification. Additional information may be required after initial review.
