The Mary Rose; life in The time of Henry VIII Week 1

Our new story is based around a ship called the Mary Rose. It was reportedly King Henry VIII’s favourite ship. The start of our story is an event called the Battle of the Solent at a time when the Mary Rose has already been sailing for about 35 years.

To start off, we looked at images of a ship called the Mary Rose, which sailed from around 1510 to 1545. With the help of images and information from the Mary Rose website (www.Mary rose.org) we tried to imagine what life might be like for her crew. We tried to imagine the life of the soldiers, the sailors, the surgeons, the cooks, the officers, the pursers, the gun crews and even the ships dog… we then had a go at an imagined diary.

The next step was a visit to the ship on the morning of the Battle of the Solent when Henry VIII may or may not have had lunch on board. The ‘crew’ wrote a letter home as some of them might not come back.

We started the dreaded ‘telling the time in” maths this week. Going outside to make full use of the sunshine, we set up a big clock face and used it to start telling the time…
In music with Mrs Butler, the pentatonic scale was used as a basis for the children’s own compositions. They’re not finished yet but we’ll upload them to Seesaw when they are!
In English, we had a grammar recap of past tense verbs and use of apostrophes. In our reading sessions, we had a look at story openers.
Our science unit this term is around humans and animals. We started with what we think we know about the human skeleton, what it is for and what it looks like before thinking about animals that don’t have one.

In terms of our other activities, the morning runs have continued, we started looking at portraits in art by drawing our own self portraits (but the children refused to let me publish them!) and in P.E. We continued cricket and started preparations for sports day!
