Superintendent's Summary DR. JACK PARKER ~ 8.31.22

We are one month into a new and exciting school year! With much of the recovery from learning left on the table due to the pandemic already under our belts, we are focused on giving our students the very best learning experience we can. Now is the best time to consider extracurricular activities if your child is not already involved in one. There is something for everyone! Reach out to your school counselor if you have any questions regarding possibilities for enriching your child’s MV experience through participation in a club or other school activity.

Also, last year MV recognized our veterans, active military, and fire and police first responders during a 20th anniversary 9/11 ceremony. This year, we invite all who serve or have served and their families to join us for a breakfast program at Mt. Vernon High School on Friday, September 9 at 9:00 AM. We will provide a message of thanks as well as provide some student entertainment. Details are listed below.

MVHS Students Create Garden & Support Local Food Pantry

Students at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) recently built a self-sustaining garden that supports one of our local food pantries with fresh produce.

The MVHS students in Jobs for America (JAG) and the new Community Service Club led the initiative, along with the staff sponsor, Mr. Cochran. The MVHS welding class helped provide "MV" stakes and an art class provided ceramic turtles and animals for the garden.

Many community members and organizations helped provide materials for the garden. Tony May, MVCSC Board Member and Master Gardener, helped guide students with planting. The Vernon Township Trustee, Flory May, received a grant from the Hancock County Community Foundation to purchase gravel for the project. Other community contributions include Tuttle’s Orchard who donated plants, Metal Supermarkets donated metal, Backyard Blessings donated tomato cages, and Schreiber Lumber donated wood.

To date, students have provided 245 pounds of fresh produce to the local food pantry at Fortville Christian Church.

MV Students Compete at National & International Competitions

Fortville Elementary third grader, Doran Bennett, recently ventured to California to compete in the 2022 Track & Field Junior Olympics. Running began as a recreational hobby for Doran to meet new friends, however, he quickly progressed and succeeded in competitions. Read the article about Doran's journey through track & field competitions. Two other Mt. Vernon students, Aaron Albright, a sophomore at Mt. Vernon High School, and Brody Daniel, a fourth grader at Fortville Elementary School, both competed in the ATA World Taekwondo Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. Learn about their experiences and hard work that led them to this achievement in this article.
