Students attended the UIL season kickoff on Wednesday, September 22 to get ready for the upcoming UIL season. Last year the Lindale High School teams won UIL state.
“It was really exciting to kick off the 2022 school year for UIL academics,” UIL coach Rory McKenzie said. “We’re really excited to get to work with our students and find new ways to improve.”

Students were called out of class to learn more about the upcoming UIL season. The students were able to talk to the coaches and ask questions and have a snack after the presentation.
“I think Rush went really well,” UIL coach Kari McKenzie said. “Some of my kids who were there as freshmen were talking about it being cool to see how much we have won and they want to get started.”

Students were also recognized for winning UIL State last year. They were called up to the front of the room and applauded for their accomplishments.
“To be called down and announced as a state champion is really nice,” Junior Kylie Hester said. “Not only are you able to show that all your hard work has been successful, you're able to represent your team and everything you’ve done.”
There are many UIL events dealing with mathematics and science. These include Accounting which is coached by Mrs. Galaz, Calculator Applications, Math, and Number Sense which are all taught by Mrs. Sembritzky, Science, and Robotics which are both taught by Mr. Walton.

“The team members I have met with so far have all been so excited and enthusiastic about being a part of something great,” UIL coach Stephanie Sembritzky said. “I am looking forward to working with the math team to be even more productive this year.”
There are also a few technological UIL events which include Computer Applications, and Computer Science which are coached by Mrs. English, and theatrical design which is coached by Mrs. McKenzie.
“We’ve been pretty successful,” UIL coach Amanda English said. “I’m always excited for a new [UIL] season.”

There are also many writing and social events including Literary Criticism coached by Ms. Schlessman, Current Issues and Events which is coached by Mr. McKenzie, Journalism coached by Mrs. Morrow, Spelling and Vocabulary which is coached by Mrs. Myrick, Ready Writing which is coached by Mrs. McKenzie, and Social Studies which is coached by Mr. Jarman.
“As a first year coach for the Lit Crit team, I'm really looking forward to encouraging students in their analysis of literature,” UIL coach Kristin Schlessman said. “The team we are building is excited about being part of LHS's UIL legacy which makes me really look forward to being their coach.”

There are also two speaking and performing competitions.These events include Speech and Debate which is coached by Mr. McKenzie and Mr. Fugler, and One Act Play which is coached by Mr. Jarman and Mrs. McKenzie.
“UIL Speech and Debate is unique in that it gives students an opportunity to discuss current events and topics that are in the news,” UIL coach JP Fugler said. “We are looking forward to finally getting to return to in person tournaments to further develop communication skills.
