Effective clinical laboratory communications are an essential component to any laboratory environment. As part of the required undergraduate coursework for Clinical Laboratory Science majors at UNC, cohort members must complete CLSC 620 (Clinical Laboratory Management.) During the course, students are assigned to a working group tasked with developing both laboratory focused community education/public health materials and laboratory specific internal communications. Their work is presented below.
PART 1: EXPLORING LAB LED PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGING
The goal of Part 1 of the project is to create easily understandable and informative materials for the general public related to laboratory services and additional COVID-19 scientific developments, from the viewpoint of medical laboratory scientists.
PART 2: DEVELOPING A CLINICAL LABORATORY
For Part 2 of the project, working groups focus on the development of a simulated Molecular Microbiology and/or Clinical Immunology laboratory providing COVID-19 testing services.
Groups are tasked with developing a name and mission, determining accreditation requirements, choosing a laboratory information system, and acquiring instrumentation for patient testing.
The project culminates in the development of a multimedia "New Employee Welcome Page," introducing new team members to the organization.
Group pages highlight the decision making processes during laboratory development, connect these decisions to the organizational mission, and provide a new communication model for introducing employees to the laboratory environment.
