What a busy term we have had across the school with children working conscientiously across the curriculum! The children have been excellent ambassadors in our Sporting successes this half term with our Year 6 football team taking part in the town’s football festival this week, displaying great determination and superb football skills. Well done to our Year 6 team! Staying with football our Year 5/6 football team finished 3rd in the Annual Boy’s Cup this year. Some great goals were scored by Olly and great football skills displayed by the rest of the team – Well Done! Our Girls’ football team were thrilled to be presented with the honesty award in their football competition. Well done girls!
Miss Howard celebrated our Ukulele players in Year 4 and Year 5 this half term by leading a concert to KS2, we welcomed family and friends into school to enjoy the concert. Our violinists also performed. It was great to celebrate such talent at St Augustine’s. Next term we are hoping that we will be able to listen to and celebrate the talent of our cellists.
We all dressed as characters from our favourite book to celebrate World Book Day which at St Augustine’s was a celebration and focus of Reading across the week. Thank you to the Friends of St Augustine’s for donating funds towards the Reading Windows in each class. It is fantastic to see the children enjoying and making use of them whilst they read! Thank you to Mr Kentfield-Wells for leading.
Thank you to those who attended our EYFS and Year 1 Phonics Information session this week and for the positive feedback. We will be holding more information sessions in the Summer term so watch this space. Thank you for attending our Consultation Evening this term and for your continued support over the last term.
Mrs Coates launched “Zones of Regulation” across the school with the aim to improve children’s emotional literacy and to extend their emotional vocabulary. The Zones of Regulation creates a systematic approach to teach regulation by categorising all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into 4 coloured zones. The framework helps children to move towards more independent regulation. Already we are seeing the positive impact and benefits, thank you Mrs Coates for launching.
Our Friends of St Augustine’s have had a very busy and productive term. Hosting the very successful Valentine’s Disco, the pre-loved uniform sales and more recently the fabulous Easter Hampers. The committee are invaluable and their presence and support makes St Augustine’s a better place for our children at St Augustine’s so I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team for all that they do. If you are interested in joining the team, please speak to the office.
Well done to Izzy C and Henry S for performing the violin last night at the Sage Theatre in Newcastle. I have heard it was a tremendous evening! What an experience for you both! Well Done!
Sienna, Izzy, Sophia and Mr Cernik are preparing for their baptism that will be celebrated early in the Summer term. Can we please keep the Cernik family in our thoughts and prayers as they take this step on their faith journey.
A huge thank you to all the staff and governors at St Augustine's for their commitment, hard work and dedication. We continue to keep Mrs Waite in our thoughts and prayers and pray for Miss Gibson as she awaits the arrival of her little bundle of joy! From all the staff and governors at St Augustine's we wish you all a peaceful Easter break and look forward to warmer weather and sunshine when we return to school on 17th April. Take care Mrs K Whitehead

Reception - We have been very busy in Reception this half term! We have enjoyed exploring the season of Spring in a range of our different subjects. We had so much fun on our Spring walk and loved looking at the daffodils. We have enjoyed creating some daffodils and lambs in our creative area. In Maths, we have enjoyed exploring a range of topics such as time, measurement, and numbers 5-10! We also loved learning about pairs and enjoyed our pairs walk, in which we looked for pairs in our school environment. In Literacy, we have enjoyed learning about the story Handa's Surprise and had so much fun completing our pieces of 'Guess The Animal' writing. We also worked together to design and create baskets for Handa to help her carry the fruit. Great work Reception! Miss Barnard
Year 1 - This half term Year 1 have enjoyed creating puppets and listening to guest readers on World book Day. They loved Careers Day and hearing all about being a technician, especially getting the chance to put wires and connectors into a mock socket. Our reading window is a great addition to the classroom and is well-used. Year 1 have also developed their creativity with 3D picture making. They are becoming better story writers in English after reading 'The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth' and have tried really hard with using numbers to 50, measuring length and learning the 10 x table in Maths. Mr Kentfield-Wells
Year 2 - Time has flown by in Year 2! Our classroom is looking lovely with the spring sunshine coming through our reading window. The donated rug, cushions, books and bookcase have made a wonderful space which we love using every day. We have been working really hard on our reading, writing and maths skills as well as using our creative skills to make our imaginative designs. Our class book this half term has been Major Glad and Major Dizzy: a story of toys watching their surroundings change over the years. Our favourite line was, ‘You have jelly on your hat.’ which made us laugh. The story inspired us to write descriptions, a letter and finally, a diary entry imagining we were Major Glad. In maths, we have been working hard on our arithmetic to help us solve calculations more quickly. We have also learned about different units of measure and what they look like in real life. We now know about cm, m, ml, l, g and kg. Our Design and Technology project has been all about Moving Monsters. We looked at a special moving book made out of card, found pivots in different objects and then designed our own moving monster. We asked our friends to vote for their favourite design before we made our own moving monster. At this time of year, it is important that we know about Lent and Easter. We have learned about the different events marked in Holy Week and about symbols we might see in church at this time. Most of all, we know that we should always love one another and be grateful for everything we have. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter, with time for fun and for rest. Thank you for all your support! Mrs. Tucker.
Year 3 - It has been a busy half term in Year 3. The children have thoroughly enjoyed all areas of learning! The children have completed their swimming sessions where they perfected their swimming techniques. They have been excellent role models on our walks to and from the Dolphin Centre. The children have loved learning about Lent and explored this in RE this half term as well as their 'Be Spirited' afternoon. In English we have been learning all about whales! The children have produced some wonderful information leaflets and simile poems on whales. We have been working hard in Maths on Fractions and Mass where the children have thoroughly enjoyed. In Science we have been learning about rocks, soils and fossils and the children have produced some amazing written pieces on Mary Anning. Miss Gilliland
Year 4 - What an amazing half term we have had, filled with lots of different activities. Starting off with the amazing World Book Day, listening to careers chosen by some of our class parents, participating in our Ukulele concert and finally with some of our class taking part in an amazing dance display at Darlington Hippodrome. It has definitely been action packed. Along with these activities, the children have worked so hard during their assessment week this half term, along with taking everything within their stride in terms of their school work. Our volcano topic appears to have been a huge hit and it was great to see all of the amazing work produced and uploaded to Class Dojo. Overall, the whole of the Spring Term has been great and I hope you all have a fantastic Easter break. If any of you are away to warmer climates have a safe trip and I hope everybody has a fun filled Easter. Mr. Cummins
Year 5 - Although this half term has been short, we have still filled it with lots of learning and lots of fun. The children have discussed how much they enjoyed netball and they have improved so much. They have loved our geography topic on rainforests their favourite lessons seem to be designing their own rainforest animal and debating 'Who killed Chico Mendes?' Lots of children enjoyed designing 'doodlers' in DT. One impressive highlight of the term was performing for KS2 and parents in our music concert, they children and Mrs Barr thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the most noticeable improvement in class this term is the amount of children who are enjoying reading in the mornings, we have a wonderful reading area which the children are excited to use each day. Happy Easter! Mrs Barr
Year 6 - What a busy half term Year 6 have had as we prepare for our SATS in May. All children have been really focused on their learning as they strive to be the best they can be. A highlight of our half term was when we were able to join with our buddies in Reception, along with our families to celebrate Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Year 6’s supported their buddies as we moved around the prayer stations so well and I know Reception loved this time too. Another highlight has been our PE work where we have been exploring counter balances and counter tension. Here are some of our favourite balances! Mrs Coates and Miss White
