Rachel Carson Marine biologist, writer, and scientist

Rachel Carson, born on May 27th, 1907, was a Marine Biologist, writer, and scientist. She was born on a family farm in Pennsylvania, with her mother, Maria Frazier and her father, Robert Warden Carson.

Growing up, Rachel loved to read and write, and even published her first book when she was only eight. As she grew older, she read many books and after graduating in 1925, she carried on her love for writing and published 12 books in her lifetime, including, "Silent Spring," a novel about the effects we have on the environment.

In 1925, Rachel Carson graduated Pennsylvania College for Women as a Biologist, she acquired a summer scholarship to Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory.

In the summer of 1930, Rachel Carson taught zoology Johns Hopkins Summer school with her friend, Grace Lippy, who she met at the summer school for zoology when they were assigned as lab partners.

Rachel Carson achieved her master's degree for the thesis, "The Development of the Pronephros During the Embryonic and Early Larval Life of the Catfish."

In the summer of 1932, Rachel was pursuing her PhD, when she was forced to drop out of graduate school in 1934, due to lack of funds. This was during the Great Depression.

In July, 1944, Rachel Carson proposed an article to Reader's Digest about the research from Patuxent Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately, Reader's Digest turns it down, due to it being too "unpleasant."

One way to open your eyes is to ask yourself, "What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew i would never see it again?

As 1951 arrives, Rachel grows weary and retires from The US Fish and Wildlife Service to begin writing full time.

Rachel Carson died on April 14th, 1964 in Silver Spring, MD. After living a long legacy of writing and science, she will always be remembered as one of the greats...

For the sense of smell, almost more than any other, has the power to recall memories and it is a pity that you use it so little.
