THE PENN RADIATION ONCOLOGY SPOTLIGHT

A Message from Dr. Metz

Our department has been very busy since the last issue of Spotlight! Congratulations to the team working on the FLASH proton project on the Program Project Grant from the NIH. We continue to push science to help our future patients. Protons are coming to LGH and Virtua patients later this Summer and our teams will be working hard to finalize the acceptance and commissioning of the facilities. We had a stellar Match Day with a new class of incoming medical residents and Match Day for the physics residency program is coming soon. Spring is always a time of transitions for the department, but this year is a bit different. With Covid-19 on the decline, some normalcy has returned to life in general. Opportunities for engaging with friends and colleagues have ramped up with conferences, travel, dinners, and other events seemingly emerging everywhere. I know there is pent up demand for interacting with colleagues. As I visit our centers, one of the most common questions is “When are we having a party?!” From my perspective, as soon as possible!! It has been a challenging two years, and I sincerely appreciate all the efforts you have made to support our patients and the missions of the department. I am convinced we will come out of this stronger than ever, although with a few marks that we won’t forget. I really look forward to personally engaging with each of you in the coming weeks. In the interim…Stay safe out there…

NIH Grant

Our FLASH Radiation P01, program project grant with the NIH was approved in January! This is a $12.3M grant that was awarded by the NIH under the direction of Costas Koumenis and Amit Maity. There was a cast of many physicians, physicists, and biologists that worked for over 2 years to have this important grants awarded. We are working on this grant is collaboration with colleagues at Oxford University, Duke University, and Heidelberg University. It was impressive to read the review of the grant as the experts specifically called out the “dream team of investigators” looking at FLASH radiation. Congratulations to all involved!! This grant started February 1st and will continue for 5 years of work on the biology, technology, and preclinical work to define the mechanism of action of FLASH radiation. This positions Penn Medicine as the continued world leader in the development of FLASH proton radiation.

We have also signed contracts with IBA for almost $1M to support FLASH preclinical work. In addition, IBA is supporting both installation of new equipment on a proton gantry to deliver FLASH in patients, and personnel onsite to support our development work. We have also agreed upon a framework for IBA to fund human clinical trials once the technical installation and study design is completed.

All of this solidifies our position as the top funded radiation oncology department in the US. Thanks again to all the team for their hard work!

"As cancer-killing CAR-T cells course through the body, they make occasional pit stops at the gut. What they do there — and which gut microbes they meet up with — could potentially change the prospects of these engineered immune cells. Andrea Facciabene, PhD, of Radiation Oncology, says the immune system “needs the gut microbiota as a source of stimuli to be kept in equilibrium and be fit.”

2/22/2022 TuTu Twos-day

PCAM therapists celebrated Feb. 22, 2022, making it a palindrome. It is not just any old boring palindrome like 1/11/11 or 9/9/99. Remarkably, it is also "Twosday," since the date happens on a Tuesday and celebrated in their TuTus. This is such a rare occasion that none of us alive today will see it ever happen again.
