Modern Foreign Languages (French) "To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world." Chinese Proverb

Intent

The core language taught at Moorlands Primary School is French. This language has been chosen at Moorlands because we feel it provides the closest link to English of all the foreign languages. This allows children with lower language skills and those that have English as an additional language to access it more easily.

We believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language.

In addition, children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in future.

We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others."

It is the intention that all children in KS2 will access first quality teaching of French in order to adequately prepare them for KS3. KS1 children will be introduced to MFL through exploring greeting in other languages.

Implementation

Children develop their love of language learning and develop skills throughout their time in school.

In KS2, children are taught in weekly sessions. Children in school participate in, also celebrate language learning through songs and stories. We aim for our children to develop an appreciation of songs and stories in French throughout their time at the school. As we acknowledge children’s different learning styles, our children learn through active participation in actions, rhymes, stories, song, grammar focus, video clips, sentence structure, dictionary work, and many more creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills.

Our languages curriculum is reinforced by our links with the closest high school.

We have developed an MFL curriculum using the scheme Primary Languages Network, which meets the current needs of children at Moorlands. Our planning is based around topic areas and linking these closely with each year groups other curriculum areas.

• We plan, using the National Curriculum and the tools on Primary Languages Network.

• We enhance the curriculum using progression grids.

• Subject Progression grids are used to develop long term planning.

• Teachers use the long-term planning to plan units of work and deliver individual lessons.
