My Voyage By:Vivianna verdugo

LSWHTA 2022

Who am I?

Hello I am Vivianna Verdugo, and I come from Tucson, Arizona. I'm Mexican American and most of my family came from Mexico. My amazing mother especially is from Sinaloa, Mexico. The best way to describe myself is a thoughtful, helpful person. One of the main reason’s why I wanted to be in LSWHTA, Is learning about past and even learn more about how my ancestors survived and their living conditions where Even though my academic career is to become a veterinarian. This program has really helped me learn about the world and resources we use, and they used back then to today and how incredible it is how they got here, But it’s important to me and my Hispanic heritage.

The people that once inhabited this land displayed resilience during difficult times and changes, how does resilience play into our life?

Resilience plays in our life every day, it’s a process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional adjustment to external and internal demands. But how we migrate for a new better life no one wants to leave their home but just have no choice and make a new home and adapt.

Creosote plant

Why is nature the center of many Indigenous tribes’ cultures? The outdoors was like a whole hospital for them as they used nature to survive, healing.Thye also used it for shelter 90% of nature is edible. Couple of examples are Palo verde trees, the flowers are very sweet and you can eat them, as well as the beans and you can also make flour out of it. Also creosote plant can be made into tea to treat kidney stones. Nature was their biggest resource.

The world today also uses nature in everyday life. All the products like, perfume, lotion, shampoo, medicine, was made out of nature, like plants. We also work with nature to get our food today as well.

Has the idea of home changed throughout time? What imagery represents your home?

In my opinion, no I don’t think the idea of home has changed because even though home can be in multiple places, regardless of what home brings comfort, where you go to eat, where your loved ones are, where you lay your head at night, that has never changed and always been the same.

Ode poem-Oh home

Oh how you bring recollections /Oh how you bring so many feelings /Oh how you bring people together /Without you home their is no place like home /Home brings laughter /Home brings sadness /Home brings comfort /Home has food /home has people /Home brings people /Home has like no other place in the world /Oh home what would I do without you /Without you there is no safe place /Oh home how I do love you

What brings me home and joyness😁❤️

Jason Nez

Jason Nez is Diné and a fire archaeologist and Such an amazing person devoted to his job and the world.Probably one of the most dedicated people I’ve ever met.Honestly it was very motivating when he talked about the world and the environment and how we basically are destroying our world and the animals habitat today. He didn’t even sugar coat it as well he was straight forward which is new because not a lot people do that. But he is what we call role model and his story’s are amazing!

LSWHTA has impacted me and my mindset in such great positive way!All these places we visited and people we met was amazing life time experience.Learning how it was back then and learning our culture what they used their tools and the tools we use now how we use same tools today to help us.It definitely helped me a lot learn the past with the people and all these connections was amazing and the relationships we built.Just huge thank you to them for changing my life in a positive way and learning how to survive a apocalypse
