Verbatim: Students react to Ukrainian Invasion

Priya Gupta, junior

“It’s a diplomacy crisis because there’s not a lot that we can do against Putin since he’s kind of doing his own thing, and as much as we say that we’ll cut of diplomatic relations with Russia, it’s much more dangerous for the US to get involved in it [the fighting].”

The situation is really scary , and it has pretty scary implications since there’s [Russian] forces on the ground right now and they're trying to take over Ukraine. It has really big implications for what they [Russia] could do next if they are successful. he [Putin] really wants to keep extending his area farther. if he is able to take over Ukraine, he’s going to keep pushing.

I do feel like they [Nato and the united states] should be more involved but in an economic and sanction sense, because, honestly, I don't really want to see Americans go and die for Ukraine. Because, you know, we've done this before for other countries, and it's just been a disaster. But I really do feel America needs to be more involved.

I'm also afraid that it [russia further invading ukraine] might set a precedent for other situations around the world. North Korea and South Korea have territorial claims for each other, And same with Taiwan and China. It's a little bit concerning that if nothing really happens as a result of this, nobody goes against what Russia did, it could result in a bad precedent being set and China invades Taiwan or North Korea invades South Korea, cascading effect of wars, and that kind of freaks me out.

I’m really worried considering the fact he [Putin] has nuclear weapons — and so do we — and those obviously are really destructive. And he also said if people try to intervene with what he’s doing he’ll impose consequences that have never been seen before. And in the same interview he mentioned his nuclear weapons. So yeah, I’m a little scared.

I’m assuming he [Putin] probably will eventually expand further past Ukraine depending on what NATO does right now. If there’s not really a good response then I think he definitely will expand beyond Ukraine since he’ll already have the initiative.
