to the 235 Wake Forest University staff members who celebrated nearly 3,000 years of combined service to the University in 2021.

45 Years

Mike Bottoms, now retired University Police Officer, is recognized as this year's longest serving honoree with more than 45 years of dedicated and committed service to the Wake Forest community. Congratulations, Mike!

40 Years

In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court and an estimated 750 million people worldwide watched the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Also in 1981, Cindy Davis began her 40-year-long career as Administrative Coordinator for the Wake Forest Biology Department. Congratulations, Cindy!

35 Years

In 1986, Halley’s Comet visited our solar system and gas was only an average of 89 cents per gallon. Also in 1986, WFU alumna Beth Tedford began her career at Wake Forest – although she technically arrived on campus at the age of 3 when her father, Harold Tedford, accepted a faculty position in the Theatre Department. Congratulations, Beth!

30 Years

The following 8 colleagues joined WFU in 1991, the same year that the World Wide Web’s first page officially went live on the internet and Johnny Carson announced his retirement from The Tonight Show. That same year, then Senator Joe Biden visited campus and gave a guest lecture for the Wake Forest School of Law.

The following 14 colleagues joined in 1996, the first year U.S. News and World Report ranked Wake Forest as one of the top 30 national universities. Also in 1996, Oprah Winfrey started her famous book club, and would soon feature The Heart of a Woman by Maya Angelou, an American author, poet, civil rights activist, and the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest.

20 Years

28 colleagues joined Wake Forest in 2001, the same year Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone premiered and the first iPod was released. General Colin Powell became the 65th Secretary of State and would later give the 2004 WFU Commencement Address. General Powell also participated in a virtual Face to Face Speaker Forum in March 2021, prior to his passing in Oct. 2021.

82 colleagues joined the University in 2011, the year that a computer program named "Watson" competed on Jeopardy against the show's most celebrated contestants, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter – and won. Wake Forest founded the LGBTQ+ Center and opened a new welcome center, named for alumnus and benefactor Porter Byrum.

The following 65 colleagues joined Wake Forest in 2016, the same year that the Chicago Cubs beat the "Billy Goat Curse," winning the World Series Championship for the first time since 1908, and the Broadway musical Hamilton took home 11 Tony Awards. 2016 was also the year that Wake Forest announced the Wake Will Lead campaign, the University's largest philanthropic campaign with a $1 billion goal.
