Literacy

This half term, we have explored the skills needed to write a diary entry from Matilda's point of view when breaking into Miss Trunchbull's house. We explored how Matilda would be feeling at certain points in the scene and discussed how her language would change because of this. We looked at a range of different skills, including:

  • Emotive language
  • Use of informal tone
  • Sentence openers
  • Use of first person

LIRA

We have focused on The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan.

  • Making predictions
  • Answering a range of LIRA style questions
  • Exploring a character's point of view
  • Exploring similarities and differences between characters
  • Definitions of ambitious vocabulary
  • Author's choice of language
  • Reading fluency
  • Expressing our own opinions on what we are reading

Maths

This half term, the Class 7 maths class have recapped our place value and arithmetic skills so that we are prepared for the next academic year. We have also recapped our knowledge of geometry and we have become more familiar with the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We have also been recapping all of our year 4 knowledge ready for year 5.

Topic

We have explored music in topic this half term. We have listened to a range of blues style music and expressed our preferences, likes and dislikes.

Next, we listened to 'Fight Song' by Rachel Platten. We listened to the recorded version and a live version of the song, comparing differences between the two. Using our knowledge of pitch and dynamics, we then practiced singing 'Fight Song' as an ensemble.

To finish off the year, we completed an art project! Our focus was drawing and we looked at the artist Ben Mosley. We learnt how to shade drawings and add tone where needed. We first applied these skills to finish off one of Ben Mosley's own pieces of artwork before moving on to completing one of our own of Barnsley town hall.

Science

In Science, we have explored material changes and changes of state.

  • Solids, liquids and gases
  • Heating and cooling
  • Using a thermometer
  • Extreme temperatures
  • The water cycle
  • How rates of evaporation changes

RSHE

Our focus in RSHE has been 'Living in the Wider World'. We have looked into how we can protect the environment at home and at school, the benefits of reusing items, different community groups in Barnsley, how different people contribute to a community, and the value of diversity.
