ACETIC ACID IN TEXTILE INDUSTRIES BY SANA DESAI

What is Acetic Acid?

Acetic Acid is a type of acid which is colorless and it contains a strong taste or smell. It is also a liquid and the main element used in Acetic Acid is vinegar. Acetic Acid is produced by fermentation and oxidation of natural carbohydrates such as vinegar.

Why a Textile Industry? What is a Textile Industry?

Textiles Industries are in charge of cloth, designs and yarn. The textile industry makes cloth using natural materials, synthetic materials or even some materials from the chemical industry. A lot of acids are also used in the textile industry and they are used for multiple purposes such as dyeing the cloth a particular color. For that particular step, acetic acid is used. But the major role of a Textile Industry is to create cloth and garments with different patterns, colors and designs. In a textile industry, a lot of people have different roles such as the textile technologist, beamer, blender and more. People working in textile industries usually deal with colors, yarn and different types of fabrics.

So what are garments if added Acetic Acid? Do they fall in Acids or Bases?

When you add acetic acid on garments or cloth, the cloth itself does not fully turn into an acid because the garment is a cloth. But if there is acetic acid in the garments then it might effect human skin. The clothes we were contain some type of alkaline or acid but it a specific cloth is dyed using acetic acid there is a chance that the cloth contains acidic elements. Cloths or garments do not fall in either one of acids or bases since they are not an element but if we are judging on the acetic acid then it would fall into the acidic category. Also, if we were looking at vinegar because sometimes people use vinegar then it would be an acid as well as be 3 on the pH scale. But this is particularly about garments so they are not considered as an acid or base but if it contains more of something like acetic acid then it can be called as a item which contains more acid.

How do you make garments in a Textile Industry? How does science relate with it?

Garments in a textile industry go through a lot of steps and procedures such as designing, creating etc. Making garments in a textile factory requires specific machines such as a sewing machine, dyeing machine and more. To make garments or clothes, the designers design and sketch variety of designs. Then, a sample is made from the designer's sketch. The sample consists of only a small part from the sketch not the whole piece. After that, the workers start making the real design so they mark, sew, sort the designs. After the design is done then they inspect the design and after it goes through the inspection process, they finish the product by decorating it. Decorating includes putting color into the garments. Then they ship they garments. Science is used while making garments because they use chemical reactions for different colors and they use different acids to add color in the garment. So the process of dyeing the garments includes science in them. Also, science is used to create different fabrics because they use chemicals to create different types of material such as cotton, silk etc. Hence, science is used in the textile industry for various purposes.
