Superintendent's Summary DR. JACK PARKER ~ 1.31.2022

As you know, the locally elected board of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation voted to place a referendum on the ballot for May 3, 2022. Should this pass, our school would see revenues of $3.2M per year. That amount, combined with cost-cutting and other savings, would assist in filling our $6.4M loss we will be experiencing in 2023 due to the Increment and tax cap losses. A moderate ask of $0.17 per $100 of net assessed valuation will help us to sustain our Operations Fund, as well as increase pay for teachers and classified staff. Additionally, we would be able to provide one School Resource Officer at all schools and have two at the high school. Should our efforts fail, our class sizes will go up and programming for our students would decrease. To learn more about our referendum, please visit our referendum facts page on our website. There, you will find a tax calculator that will help you understand your investment in our schools for our $0.17 Operating Referendum on May 3.

We are fortunate to have an incredibly supportive and engaged school community. Of our staff who are eligible voters in Vernon and Buck Creek Township, approximately 75% are registered to vote. Approximately 66% of our parents are registered to vote. We strongly encourage everyone to register to vote and regularly participate in elections. County-Wide Vocational Training Initiatives

There are strong efforts among the leaders of all four county public schools to bring additional cooperative vocational training to Hancock County. Currently all four schools send students to five different career centers outside of the county for various vocational training.

A group of business and community leaders has been working for a year discussing the county’s workforce development. The vision these county stakeholders developed is that “every Hancock County resident has the opportunity for career success through relevant workforce training."

Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker shared, “We also believe we need a standalone career center supported by schools, businesses and the county leaders, so we can have the highest level of collaboration. We need to work to communicate opportunities and message the value of workforce training and technical education pathways for our students and our communities, including those that have graduated from high school.”

Schools are aligning student interests, via a recent high school survey, with industry needs. A letter from all four superintendents expressing their commitment to this initiative can be found HERE.
