PDP Newsletter April 2022

Although not consistently, we have had coworking groups at the GTU for a few years now. Before the pandemic, students who set aside three or four hours for writing would get together in one of the classrooms and work on their different projects. They would have set intervals for coffee/tea and breaks but dedicated most of the time to writing. The exact process continued even during the pandemic via Zoom, and one group was meeting regularly until a few weeks ago.

One of the most significant benefits of coworking groups is fostering discipline. Since participants set aside time for coworking groups in their weekly schedule, they tend to form a habit of coming together and writing. Another benefit is that it promotes bonds of solidarity. Getting thoughts from your head to the page is challenging in itself, but not having time to do so makes the process even more frustrating. Whatever the challenge, coworking groups allow the participants to share those challenges and work through them together. Most importantly, coworking groups prove that writing can be a communal act; it does not need to be done in isolation.

If you are interested in joining a coworking group and don't know where to start, please contact me.

PDP Workshops

The overall theme of the workshops for this term is jobs. Ranging from “how to search for a job” to “how to give a job talk,” each workshop covers a distinct aspect of the job application process. The goal of these workshops is to help you prepare for life after graduation.

In March, the first workshop was on "How to Write a Teaching Philosophy?" Dr. Diandra Erickson led that workshop by sharing the fundamentals of crafting a teaching philosophy. Here's the link to the recording:

Dr. Sharon Jacob led the second workshop on how to write a diversity statement. You can find the link to the recording below. In addition, I am including a chapter on the same subject from Karen Kelsky's The Professor Is In and a brief write-up from Inside Higher Ed magazine.

In April, the first workshop will bring together Newhall Fellows and the Excellence in Teaching Awardee to foster conversations on teaching. The second workshop will be an experiment where we'd conduct a mock interview for two jobs. Candidates will apply with their materials, and faculty members from various departments will interview the candidates and give feedback on the submitted materials.

Women-only Special Issue of Religious Studies

In spite of the fact that some of the most interesting work in philosophy of religion is being done by women, philosophy of religion remains a male-dominated subject. Last year, fewer than 8% of submissions to Religious Studies, the foremost philosophy of religion journal, were by women.

In view of this, Religious Studies is inviting women to submit papers for a women-only Special Issue of Religious Studies on any area of philosophy of religion to highlight the excellent work being done by women in the field.

Each submission should be no more than 8,000 words, and papers should be submitted via the Religious Studies portal by 30 September 2022. For further enquiries, please contact Dr Tasia Scrutton (t.scrutton@leeds.ac.uk).
