Day 3 Recap 2019 Men's Golf National Championship

Mesa, Ariz. - Kansas Wesleyan’s Ben Hadden retained his lead for a third-straight day, matching Texas Wesleyan’s Victor Miron at 73 (+2) Thursday. If Hadden holds his lead, its Kansas Wesleyan’s first-ever national championship on the golf course.

News and Notes

  • Texas Wesleyan posted a day-three 294, using Miron’s effort to go 10-over par Thursday. The Rams lead South Carolina Beaufort by 13 strokes, going in to the final day, after USC Beaufort shot 290 on day three.
  • A pair of Sooner Athletic Conference teams made the day’s biggest leaps in the standings, as Oklahoma City jumped in to fourth from ninth with an even-par 284, while Wayland Baptist jumped seven spots, in to eighth, with a day-two 287.
  • OCU’s jump came thanks in part to Ty Stites big day, posting one of two 68s to get to +1 for the championship.

News and Notes

  • Hadden’s round also helped Kansas Wesleyan survive the cut in its first-ever appearance in the national championship.
  • Hadden’s front-nine 32 wasn’t the best nine-hole score of the day, but it did come from his school’s pairing, as Missouri Valley’s Jan Jedlicka, who shot 31 on the back nine, his opening nine holes of the day.
  • Jedlicka’s 31 helped Missouri Valley make the cut, as well, in its first-ever national championship appearance.

News and Notes

  • Stites’ round wasn’t the day’s best, though, as Wayland Baptist’s Johannes Hounsgaard shot the best round of the tournament, to this point, shooting 66 (-5).
  • Hounsgaard was balanced in his 66, with three birdies on the front nine, two on the back, along with an eagle. His only blemish on the card was a double bogey on 10.
  • Speaking of the 10th, it’s been the toughest hole on players throughout the championship, yielding just 10 birdies while dishing out 99 double bogeys or worse, and more bogeys (154) than pars (138) among the now-91 player field, a field that started with 156 players Tuesday and Wednesday.

News and Notes

  • USC Beaufort’s Bobby Dunphy had the first ace of the championship, taking advantage of the shortest hole on the course, from 135 yards.
