Alabama Productivity Center Website
Situation:
The Alabama Productivity Center’s staff saw the need to redesign aspects of both the front-end and back-end of their current website. While the current website was initially designed by previous in-house MIS interns, it was no longer effective in meeting the needs of the center. The initial website design was a single-page website, where the entire site was situated on the main page, so users had to continuously scroll down the page until they found the information they were looking for. Not only this, the current website was also lacking clear call-to-actions that would direct users to complete desired tasks such as registering for classes or applying to be an intern, which would all help APC meet their business objectives.
For the redesign, APC envisioned a multi-page website where different pages would help keep information organized and easily accessible to users. The desire for the new website was to highlight both Internships and Professional Services, providing the user valuable information and giving them an option to reach out to APC with the click of a button.
Solution:
In order to start redesigning the website, APC paired its two in-house MIS interns, Jared Waller and Noah Yoshida, with their marketing intern, Shaelin Jones. Through this unique collaboration, the interns were able to combine skills of web development and marketing to ensure that the new website was not only functional but also user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. Shaelin would use her creativity to create site maps and layouts and then share her ideas with Jared and Noah. Jared and Noah would then implement these ideas into the code using a variety of development tools including: C#, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, SQL, and ASP.NET.
For the new website, the interns created 7 different pages: Home, About Us, Client Services, Internships, Success Stories, Locations, and News. All of the pages were accessible through the main navigation bar, so users would no longer have to scroll through a single page to find the information they were looking for. The new pages also feature a variety of images, pops of color, and clear call-to-action buttons intended to help catch the users’ eyes. Two of the key content changes with the new website were adding a directory of the Advisory Board and also adding a Success Stories page. Both are very valuable in showing who APC is and the success and partnerships it has. Examples of the new pages can be seen below:
