Recently, I color graded a feature film entitled, "The Field". It's a story about a couple who decide to move into an old farm in Wisconsin, hoping to escape their busy life in Chicago. Eventually, they start noticing strange apparitions and attempt to discover the truth behind the visions in the field.
During pre-production and production, Tate Bunker (Director), referenced Pre-Raphaelite paintings that would serve as his inspiration for many of the scenes.
When it came time to color grade, we used these paintings to establish a palette that we could apply to the footage. For example, the main color palette of the film had warm, red and yellow hues complemented by green hues.
As a colorist, I'm used to clients bringing in image samples that they would like to emulate. This was the first time I had a director bring in art samples as inspiration, leading me to create the individual palettes.
"Rob brought these images to a whole new level. It's amazing what he can do in the color suite! -Tate Bunker, Director "The Field"

We also created palettes that were unique to particular characters and scenes.
The film contains several dream sequences. We unified the look of these sequences with a palette based on green and cyan with red accents.
