Changes to the new curriculum explained

British Sign Language Video explaining the changes

This is an exciting time for the young people of Wales and indeed, the pupils and staff at Llansannor. A new Curriculum for Wales is currently being implemented across Wales that will enthuse learners from 3 to 16, giving them the foundations they need to succeed in a changing world.

At Llansannor we look forward to determining how, and when, we teach the new curriculum. Our staff have already began our journey and have had a lot of training with regards to the New Curriculum. The learning and teaching, has already started changing to embrace these changes. Our learners, and their views, have also been at the heart of our journey.

We are getting ready to implement these changes and a lot of work is going on 'behind the scenes' to ensure that we are ready. We will be updating you more and more as the weeks go on and give you further information about how this will change some of our expectations and teaching at Llansannor.

Cwricwlwm i Gymru Llansannor

Curriculum refers to anything that our children learn in our school. It is our aim that the curriculum at Llansannor, fosters the all-round development of our pupils and maximises learning in our unique, rural location. Within our curriculum, pupils should find a means of developing their individual personalities for them to reach their potential and, in particular, gain the skills, attitudes and knowledge that will meet their future needs.

With our Christian values at the heart of school life; Llansannor provides a creative, engaging, stimulating curriculum that is challenging to all. Our education is inclusive, accommodating the needs of all pupils, regardless of their ability. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that places the well being of pupils at the heart of all we do.

We plan high quality, cross curricular lessons that will ignite a love of learning and motivate pupils to achieve the best they can be. Lessons will be linked, where possible, to real life experiences as well as the context of our setting.

Pupil voice is key to everything we do and the children's views will be taken into consideration when planning a topic. Pupil's will explore the skills they will be taught and be given the opportunity to share their thoughts on what they would like to learn. This empowers children being a part of their learning experiences and give a higher level of engagement.

• Class based learning is enhanced with a variety of visits, visitors and in-school activities planned throughout the year. We align these experiences with our carefully planned curriculum.

School Vision

Together with parents, governors and pupils, we put together the key values that the school community hold at the forefront.

Staff decided the key values that they held true to themselves and what we thought were the important values to instil in the pupils. These were shared with parents, via an online form, and these words were altered accordingly.

Pupils were consulted and a new strap line created with the children. This strap line 'Together with God, we will explore, discover and flourish.', was developed alongside the idea of a tree as a visual of what we intend to achieve.

Progression Steps

While Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 will disappear the principles of the Foundation Phase will remain the same but will become a part of one seamless curriculum for children aged 3 to 16 providing more joined up learning.

Progression steps will now be in place at ages 5, 8, 11, 14 and 16 relating to broad expectations of a child’s progress.

Each progression step will comprise of:

Progression Step 1: Nursery & Reception

Progression Step 2: Years 1, 2 & 3

Progression Step 3: Years 4, 5 & 6

At Llansannor we intend to allow time for each 'Progression Step Team' to plan together to share ideas and ensure progression between each year group.

Four Purposes

The four purposes have been the starting point and aspiration for our curriculum design.

Ultimately, the aim of our curriculum is to support its learners to become:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

We have 'broken down' each of the key statements of each of the four purposes and decided what this will look like for us. Each of the statements were, in consultation with the children, were put into 'child speak' and differentiated to ensure progression.

Ambitious and Capable Learners who are ready to learn throughout their whole lives.

Ethically Informed Citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the World.

Enterprising Creative Contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.

Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

Areas of Learning Experience (AoLE)

The curriculum will be organised into 6 Areas of Learning and Experience:

  • Humanities (including all faith teaching and RVE)
  • Expressive Arts
  • Languages, Literacy and Communication
  • Mathematics and numeracy
  • Science & Technology
  • Health and Wellbeing

Llansannor staff have worked alongside staff at Llangan primary, South Point Primary and Y Bont Faen Primary to comprise our curriculum. Alongside specialist staff from Central South Consortium (CSC) to help to guide the process.

Staff have combined the Statement of what matters with each strand and progression step to produce a workable document that is accessible for all.

Religion, Values & Ethics (RVE)

As a Christian school we ensure values and beliefs are delivered through the following:

  • Pedagogy, provision and practice
  • Agreed Syllabus
  • Subsidiarity
  • Knowledge, skills and experience
  • Integrated curriculum

The Church in Wales are in the process of issuing guidance to support the teacing of RVE in schools. The link to which can be found below

  • Relationships and identity
  • Sexual health and wellbeing
  • Empowerment, safety and respect

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

Pupils will learning about their rights as a child.

Cluster Working

We have worked with neighbouring schools; Y Bont Faen, Llangan and South Point to develop our own curriculum. Alongside a lead advisor from Central South Consortium, we have created 'working documents' to further inform our teaching and to inform progress. These documents are continually under review and will be amended as the year progresses.

Language Literacy and Communication and Mathematics and Numeracy will remain the same while we work on the other documents.

We will continue to teach basic literacy and numeracy skills, both discretely and through the contextual curriculum.

Progression and Assessment

At Llansannor we will provide for appropriate progression which must be in accordance with the principles of progression set out in the Progression Code.

We will make ongoing assessments arrangements to support learner progression throughout the school year

We will continue to make arrangements for assessing the ability and aptitude of leaners in respect of the relevant Curriculum, on entry to a school.

Our assessment has 3 main roles:

  • Supporting individual learners on an ongoing, day-to-day basis.
  • Identifying, capturing and reflecting on individual learner progress over time
  • Understanding group progress in order to reflect on practice.

At Llansannor this will happen through:

  • Assessment for Learning (AFL)
  • Teacher Assessment
  • Hot and Cold tasks

Summative assessment will still take place in the form of:

  • Selfie
  • Reading ages
  • Non verbal
  • Baselines

These will allow us to assess a baseline of pupils learning alongside teacher assessment.

Work will continue to take place on this. We are working alongside Gareth Coombes at Collective Learning to improve our practice.
