Debating

Last week I had the privilege of joining Mrs Treadaway’s Year 9 and 7 eloquent logophiles, for a week of debating. Both teams achieved wins, the Year 9 team against Evans River and the Year 7 team against Kadina High School.

The highpoint of the week for me was witnessing our student’s commitment and professionalism. They behaved with such competence, engaging with important world viewpoints, while learning an amazing life skill.

Thank you, Ingrid for your hard work and the debating teams for giving me the honour of observing what our wonderful Byron Bay High School students are capable of.

Ms Brenda Beardshall - English Teacher

Most of us have been debating since primary school, it is a fun and unique mental challenge as well as being very enjoyable. In debating you get to view different topics from a different angles and perspectives. We believe debating helps us to develop confidence with speaking and become more adept at listening and improve with our logical thinking.

The Year 7 students wrote ...

As most of us are new to debating we were thrilled to have our first win against Kadina High School. We have already learnt so many new skills and all of us feel that debating has improved our confidence. We feel this experience has taught us how to work in a team to get the best out of each other. We are now inspired to practice and get more eloquent and confident with our public speaking.

NSW National Champions

Big congratulations to Harley Kent who played as part of the NSW All Schools Open Boys Basketball team at Nationals last week in Bendigo.

The NSW Boys played QLD in an eventful final. NSW came back from a 20 point deficit to win the Gold Medal.

Well done Harley on a great (long) season of school boys basketball. Thanks for representing our school on the big stage and bringing home the gold!

Mrs Kelley Caoyonan - Sport Organiser and Year 9 Year Adviser

Far North Coast 15s Girls Netball Gala Day

The 15s girls netball team traveled to Murwillumbah at the start of last term. They played Kingscliff High School in Game 1. It was a tight game, however in the end it was not a win for us.

The girls got the opportunity to play against Mullumbimby High School in Round 2. Mullumbimby High is an extremely competitive team and we lost in another close match.

Congratulations to our 15 team on your enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Ms Lara Cranfield - PDHPE Teacher and Year 7 Year Adviser

Outside school sporting achievement | National Golden Gloves Boxing Championships

Congratulations to Reef Dufner who is the under 18s National Golden Gloves under 18 Champion 60kg weight division.

Reef has been training incredibly hard over the year and has progressed quickly in his boxing career.

Reef will now travel to Sydney to the NSW State Championships later this year. Well done Reef!

Thank you for your patience with our new online excursion process

Thank you to our Byron Bay High School families for your patience with adopting our new School Bytes system for managing excursions online.

In May we made the switch to the new paperless system to allow you to quickly consent and pay for excursions and events on your phone or computer with no need for a printer.

We provide a wide variety of opportunities for our students ranging from school camps, the Writer's Festival, sporting events, debating, snorkelling ... the list goes on. Some of these are mandatory and related to assessments but most aren't. If it is a mandatory activity that will be stated in the email.

Sometimes students may know about these events and sometimes, like the Writer’s Festival, it is an opportunity open to multiple year groups, and it is first in best dressed.

The emails we send are to inform you and your child of these opportunities and give you the link to consent and pay online. Please check with your child if they would like to attend the excursion before consenting and paying online.

3 of the best benefits of School Bytes

  • Consent and payment can be done by you with a few clicks on your phone.
  • Friendly to the environment ... we can save over 300 pieces of paper for just one excursion, so over the course of a year that is a lot of paper.
  • Information and opportunities make their way directly to Parents/Carers and don’t get lost in student’s bags.
  • You can add events directly to your calendar via the blue icon at the top of your online permission.

We understand this has been a big change for some so thank you again for your patience while we adjust to this change.

Thank you from the office ladies

Parent Teacher Interview Nights

Parent Teacher Interview evenings will be held on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 September.

More information on how to book will come via email, so as always, please check your inbox daily for emails from us so you don't miss out.

When your child messages you that they are sick

It is crucial at all times but especially now that students who are feeling unwell advise their teacher and go immediately to sick bay.

Our first aid officer will phone or text Parents/Carers if it is necessary for their sick child to be collected. In this case a Parent or Carer will need to come to the front office to collect their child in person.

Students messaging their parents directly is not our procedure and endangers the health of others.

Please discourage your child from contacting you via text message regarding illness. It is vital that the correct procedure is followed enabling our first aid officer to monitor your child and prevent infection of other students.

If you arrive to collect your child unannounced, it is not always possible to get them from their classroom promptly and without disruption to their teacher and classmates.

Thank you for your assistance and for working together with us to keep our community healthy.

Thank you.
