Does Pokémon sound familiar to you? I’ll bet you think you know all about it? Well, I have a one question for you. Do you REALLY know what Pokémon is all about? That's the question I may answer for you today.
What is it?
I’ll bet a few of you might be saying to yourself, “What is a Pokémon?” Well Pokémon are little creatures that were made up in Japan. The name, Pokémon, is short for POCKEt MONsters. Just in case you didn’t know how to say the name, it is pronounced Poh-keh-mon. These little creatures have gone global and have most people saying… “Gotta catch ‘em all”.
The History
The first Pokemon games (Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green) came out, in Japan, February 27, 1996 for the super Gameboy
However, it was not until September of 1998 that North America finally got to get their hands on the first games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Pokémon Pinball and Snap were released for the Game Boy Color in June of 1999. By October, Pokemon Yellow also made it's debut! It was then that the games really started to take off!
The Present
Now that we went back in time, it’s time to go to the present. Over the years, the Pokémon franchise has 722 known fictional species that have made appearances in Pokémon media as of the release of the sixth generation titles Pokémon X and Y. So, whether it's in the video games, trading cards, comic books or toys, when you hear the theme song, “Gotta Catch ‘Em All”, they are talking about catching all 722 Pokémon!
