India is in South Asia. It’s the seventh largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four of the world's major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—have early roots there.
In the Fall of 2011, I visited India - primarily the north central part of the country including Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar and Agra. As I learned, visiting India is an experience unlike no other.
This is a short photo essay in black and white of some of the people and sites of India. I've chosen B&W because it directs you to the people and their faces rather than their clothing and surroundings. Please do not be mislead by these photos; India is a modern country with a leading world economy. The images here reflect my travels in less affluent regions where life is more culturally traditional.
