Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

class of the week - Junbung (5/6A)

Jingi Walla! Welcome to our class family of Junbung!

Junbung (5/6A) have been learning about British colonisation and incorporated their work into English writing tasks.

Students have read firsthand accounts of convict journals and recreated their own as convicts themselves sentenced to transportation to the new colony. Their journal entries include life in London, the crimes they committed, the perilous journey on board a ship, and what life was like when they arrived to serve out their sentence.

Junbung students have also learnt about some of the amazing contributions that convicts made, to solidify our knowledge of Indigenous cultures of the time. Artworks by the convict Joseph Lycett serve as a first had account of Indigenous life. Junbung students have begun recreating their own artworks to depict life at the time of settlement.

naidoc celebrations

This week, students celebrated NAIDOC week. After learning about the significance of NAIDOC and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, they made personal commitments to Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up. It was wonderful to see the community engaging and having important conversations with their children.

On Monday 5 September, the AlphaShows performance of Aladdin is coming to our school!

All students K-6 will attend this incursion in our school hall, which has the values theme of 'Manifesting Your Dreams and Truth'. This show will put the audience on the right path to discovering their own innate wisdom of manifesting their dreams! There’s still the story that everyone is familiar with, and characters both new and old.

Cost is $10 per child - please return the note which will be sent home next week, either with payment or authorisation to use your EHF funds for this activity.

AlphaShows specialise in bringing real, quality theatre to people who don’t normally have a chance to see a full production musical. For more information, please visit www.alphashows.com.au.

Accessing the $500 EHF for your child

You should all now be aware that the government provided a $500 Educational Hardship Fund (EHF) for each student in our school because we are in one of the LGAs identified as flood-affected. These funds have been applied to any outstanding items on your account (other than the Voluntary Contribution amount, which will be cleared from accounts if unpaid at the end of the year). Account statements have been issued to all families by mail, so you will know how much credit is available for your child/ren to use.

There are a number of conditions attached to the use of these funds, however you may wish to use it for:

  • Uniform purchases (contact the school, rather than ordering on Flexischools)
  • Excursions and activities
  • Educational competitions
  • Music In Schools program fees (contact the school to discuss)
  • Contact the school to discuss other options

Please be aware that you have until the end of the 2023 school year to utilise these funds. If your child leaves Bangalow to attend a NSW public school or high school in this timeframe, the funds will transfer with them, however if your child moves to a private or interstate school, any balance of funds will be returned to the NSW Department of Education.

Sending an absence notification to school?

When your child is absent from school, please advise us of the reason as soon as possible. You can do this with a simple phone call to the office, or by completing an Absentee Form in the School Stream app. If you are reporting the absence electronically, or responding to our automated SMS (which is sent out at 11am each day to parents of students who are absent without an explanation), please be sure to leave a detailed reason. If your child is unwell, please provide some further information so we don' t have to follow up with another phone call (e.g. "cold/flu", "headache", "tummy bug", etc).

What is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Each year Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand designates a fortnight when people come together to support farmers and workers around the world by highlighting and purchasing Fairtrade products. It’s a chance to stand up for what you believe in – whether that’s protecting the environment, gender equality, or ensuring that farmers and workers are paid fairly. This year Fair Trade fortnight runs from the 3rd-16th August.

We all make choices about how to spend our money. Every time we go to the shops or decide what to do at the weekend, we’re choosing what’s important to us and our families.

Farmers in developing countries make choices too, but when they’re paid low prices, their options become limited. For those farmers, the choice might be between having enough food for all the family to eat a proper dinner or planting trees to shelter their crops from the hazards of climate change.

For Fairtrade farmers, fair pay means the choices become easier. Having enough money to purchase dinner and trees, means that their farms will be sustainable in the long term and their family will have what they need in the short term. And that’s the simple reason that addressing poverty is one of the best ways to protect the planet. Trees will never be the top priority, not while there is food to buy. Food trumps trees. Every time. But Fairtrade means you can have both.

The great thing is that you can support Fairtrade without doing much at all - just change your purchasing habits to favour Fairtrade endorsed products! Tea, coffee, chocolate, clothing and giftware are all good examples of Fairtrade products we can access in Australia.

In Bangalow, which is Fairtrade Town, and other local towns you will find lots of options once you start looking for them! And, just as Bangalow Public School’s Mother’s Day stall this year was all Fairtrade, so will its Father’s Day Stall be too (the stall is running on Thursday 1st September). So, the gift that your child brings home to celebrate you, will also be supporting Fairtrade.

This Fairtrade Fortnight you might like to encourage your child to explore Fairtrade some more as a fun activity. They could look out for the logo in the shops, create a poster about Fairtrade, draw themselves (or you) consuming or using a Fairtrade product, or make a list of Fairtrade products they were able to find in Bangalow. The more we ask for these products in the shops, the more pressure there will be to stock them and the more we can support people in developing countries! Let’s make a difference in this world this Fairtrade Fortnight.
