Note from our Head
Dear Oakfield families,
Over the course of this week, I have had the opportunity to reflect on various aspects of human communication and how this has been affected for either better or worse over the last 20 months or so.
It has been wonderful to welcome visitors into Oakfield this week for the first time in a very long while; yesterday, Dr Patrick Brazier, the Chief Executive of Education Development Trust (our proprietors) came to see us and spend time with children and staff. He was delighted to see Oakfield in fine form, full of energy and positivity, and was impressed by the happy, purposeful buzz in classrooms and the children's speaking and social skills.
This morning we welcomed the parents and other family members of 5NA to their class assembly - the first one in person since before Covid. What a joy it was - seeing the children able to perform to a live audience and for families to be with each other and experience the school on-site was uplifting for us all.
There can be no doubt about the necessity and the benefits of face-to-face interactions; they enable us to 'read the room' in a more nuanced fashion and to notice non-verbal communications such as body language and facial expressions much more easily.
However, there is no doubt (and it is right to reflect on this during Oakfield's Computing Week) that technology is also a lifesaver in many situations, as well as a fantastic vehicle for remote teaching and learning across the globe and has enabled us to keep connected and in touch with friends and family during lockdowns and other isolating situations.
Next week is Anti-Bullying Week, and one aspect that we will explore with the children is the effect that those more subtle forms of non-verbal communication can have on others, in addition to perhaps more overt physical or verbal unkindness.
I hope that you will enjoy the communications contained in this newsletter, celebrating another week of achievement and fun.
Wishing you all happy and restful weekends.

ODD SOCKS DAY - MON 15th NOV
To begin Anti-Bullying Week next week, we will be having Odd Socks Day on Monday 15th November. All children are encouraged to wear odd socks to celebrate the fact that we are all unique and that we appreciate everybody's differences. There are no donations this year, it is simply an opportunity to mark the day as a school.

Match Report: U9 Football v Blackheath
On the 9th of November we played a U9 football match against Blackheath. In my opinion, we both played very well. They were good competitors which made us want to play really well too. In the first match we had lost by 1-3. But, we didn’t let that bring us down. In the second match we won 10 -0! I believe that it was our teamwork that made us win. We made sure to include everyone in the game so no-one would feel left out and so they would have an input on the game. 1 thing we could have improved was making sure we were all spread out and not bunched up together, this would have made us score even more goals. Thank you to Harry, Ben, Nicholas and Theodore-C for being excellent team players and congratulations to Harry for being chosen as the man of the match.

U11 Overload Tournament
We are currently taking part in the Dulwich College Overload Tournament which is an innovative format of matches being split into portions of 7v5, 5v7 and then 7v7 to see how the children adjust to the change in the number of players. We will have an update on how they got on in next week's newsletter or check out on @oakfieldprepsports Instagram.

YEAR 5
In Science this week Year 5 have been talking about animal groups. We have looked at classification and what sets animals apart from one another. 5AW made some beautiful posters to help remember the key differences
YEAR 4
Computing Week
Just a few snaps of the great tech learning that went on this week!
YEAR 3
In Science, children have been learning about inheritance and how the characteristics of two parents are passed on to their offspring. The children had the opportunity to look at two different 'bugs', identified their characteristics and then combined these to design their own offspring. We also looked at different pure dog breeds and learnt that crossbreeds inherit different characteristics from their parents.
YEAR 2
As part of their ICT lessons this half term, Year 2 are learning to write computer programs. Last week they experimented with Beebots (small motorised robots). They had to complete an obstacle course, working out how many moves it would take to complete the journey. Then we thought about how you could record that journey for someone else to follow.
This week we created our own journeys, recording them on paper so that we can swap next week, follow the instructions and find the 'treasure'.
We discovered some interesting mathematical facts using the four times table; four turns to the right or left made a complete circle, so if you want to go round twice, you must program eight turns, three times and you must program twelve. Well done to Theo for recognising the pattern and sharing it with the class!
Role playing and investigating with year 2
This week the year 2 children have been very busy! During their English lessons they became journalists. The children were gathering facts and ‘interviewing’ eyewitnesses. They wrote news articles based on the great fire of London.
During science the year 2 children were investigating forces. They had to solve one question “does the height of a ramp impact the distance a car will travel?”. They enjoyed participating in a fair, controlled investigation after making a prediction.
Masks and More
We talked about the Christmas Story and how Christians believe that Jesus was born at Christmas to save the world. We made some masks showing words that a hero should be – brave, helpful, strong, kind, thoughtful and a good listener!
YEAR 1
A few family photos didn't make it into last week's newsletter so see them all in all their glory below!
Computing Week
Year 1 really enjoyed the CLC computing workshop on the iPads. They learned how to create digital art on the BookCreator app.
UPPER FOUNDATION
This week the children worked in pairs to correctly order the passengers waiting for the bus. Fantastic collaboration!
The children have done so well in reciting and understanding the concept of ordinal numbers.
Computing Week
Being computing week at Oakfield, we were very lucky to have CLC come and visit us.
The children were shown a new app on the iPads called 'Book Creator'.
They were given step by step instructions and followed them well.
Using a voice recorder, a paint brush tool and the camera the children created wonderful, digital sketch books.
Well done everyone :D
