INSIDE LOOK DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, HERAMBA CHANDRA COLLEGE

  • Dept. of English, Heramba Chandra College always believes in the joyful teaching-learning process. Therefore, the Dept. as usual tries to engage the students in various student-centric activities along with the academic exertion. Here is a list of departmental activities for the session 2017-18.
The eminent literary and theatrical personalities such as Dr. Ananda Lal, Debashis Deb, Dr. Siddharta Biswas, Debesh Roy Chowdhury and many more have visited the department. This year (2018) the famous author, Sam Mukherjee conducted a workshop on "Creative Thinking". It was a great experience for both the teachers and the students.
Celebration of the teachers' day (2018). The student-teacher relationship of the department is friendly. The teachers are well accessible in the department. In order to make the bonding stronger the students of the department organized the departmental teachers' day.
The department does not always depend on the lecture method only. We also motivate the students to express their understanding of the subject matter. As a matter of fact the students made one interesting PPT to convey their concept on the "Innocence and Experience in Blake" which was later explained to them based on their own understanding of the concept. (November, 2017).
Group discussion is a significant concept in the field of education. In it the students share their prior knowledge to the other students. Therefore, it is a less time consuming process. As our department gives stress on the group discussion, the students get interested in the topics they learn in the class hour. Getting inspired by the group discussion, a group of students organised an interactive session on the concept of "Trinity in William Blake" in which almost all the students of 1st Year English Honours participated. (December, 2018).
This spirited department organizes at least one seminar on a new topic each year. In the year 2018 we conducted a seminar on "Supernatural States in Shakespeare and the Gothic Grotesque". In that interesting seminar we had two eminent speakers: Uma Ray Srinivashan and Debjani Sanyal from Victoria Institution College and Seth Soorajmull Jalan Girls' College respectively. What is interesting is that the departmental students performed a "Musical on Macbeth" under the direction of Amrapali Bose.

Most kind and fascinating activity done by the students of the department was to celebrate the Children's Day by distributing 'a moment of happiness' to the underprivileged children of the local area. Thanks to the pupils of the department for their humanistic approach.
Departmental picnic at Eco-Park, Kolkata (2018). On the earnest request of students and to keep from the monotony of the class routine, the Department had arranged a picnic on a Sunday at Eco-Tourism Park. This was a great interactive experience for both the teachers and the students.
Our Department focuses not only on the conceptual knowledge but also on the factual understanding of life. Of late the educationists are stressing on the concept, "Learning to live together" and our department believes that educational excursion plays a significant role in it in which pupils learn how to adjust with others to build up a stable society. Therefore, the department organised an educational excursion at Dooars where the students came across a completely new environment and people, their lifestyle and the hardships in the life of hilly people.
