Spring term 2 2022 Nursery Class

Over the past half term we have been reading the story Zog.
Zog attended dragon school and Madam dragon was his teacher. We thought about all the things that dragons might need to know, and compared this to what we learn in nursery.
"To fight knights!"
"To fly high like a butterfly"
"To not get burnt"
Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle, which is an early writing program, was introduced in Nursery class this half term. Each wiggle dance introduces a new gross motor movement, these help children to develop fine motor skills needed to write.
Whilst painting daffodils the children practiced the 'down' movement as they painted the daffodil stalks.
There were some excellent discussions as the children shared their thoughts around the egg.
"I think it's an ostrich egg because it's huge"
"I think it's got a dinosaur in it."
After 2 days the egg finally hatched, inside sat a little green dragon. Max spoke to the dragon and it whispered that his name was Harry.
Harry had a wonderful time in nursery exploring provision with the children.
But there was one problem that the children soon discovered. Mummy dragon, who lived in the home corner, had flown away! Right as her baby had hatched. Has anybody spotted her soaring in the skies above them?
The weather has started to become milder and the children have enjoyed extended periods of time accessing outdoor provision. Children have demonstrated their physical ability, communication and language, problem solving, personal and social skills and much more.
One of the poetry basket poems that we learnt this half term is 'Mrs Bluebird''.
Little Rabbit Foo Foo was the key text that children retold using a text map. Below is a short video showing nursery children retell part of the story.

World Book Day

On 3rd March we celebrated World Book Day and dressed up as our favourite book characters. The day was spent sharing and retelling different stories.

Red Nose Day

Don't we all look great dressed in red. We helped raise money for charity.
Later on in the term we demonstrated the school value 'kindness' as we came to school dressed in yellow and brought donations to help others less fortunate than ourselves.
In the last week of term children brought in their entries for the Decorative Egg Competition. Well done to everybody that entered they were all amazing.
Next half term we will be learning about growing (both plants and ourselves), eating healthily and the life cycles of plants and some animals.
We will have the opportunity to observe the life cycle of a caterpillar in class.
I wonder what will happen?
The story Oliver's fruit salad will help us to think about making healthy choices when eating and talk about where our food comes from.
What do plants need to grow? How do we look after them? These are some of the questions that will be explored as we plant our own seeds in the coming weeks.

FEE-FI-FO-FUM!

We will be sharing the story Jack and the beanstalk and using musical instruments and movement to help us retell it.
How do you think a giant moves?

Phonics

N2 children will continue to learn phonemes and their corresponding graphemes. They will also continue to access activities that cover a broad range of phase 1 phonics.
N1 children will begin to look at rhythm and rhyme.

Literacy

In literacy we will be recapping the 5 key concepts about print:
- print has meaning
- print can have different purposes
- we read English text from left to right and from top to bottom
- the names of the different parts of a book
- page sequencing
Children will be continuing to practise writing their first names.
N2 children will be encouraged to use their developing phonological knowledge in mark making.

Maths

Children will be developing their use of mathematical language 'more then' and 'fewer than'.
We will be making comparisons between objects based on height using language such as 'taller than' 'shorter than'.
N2 children will be exploring composition of the numbers 1 - 5 using Numicon.
Deconstructed role play will be introduced into provision. This allows the children to use their imagination as they engage with open ended resources creating play experiences that are meaningful to them.
We look forward to welcoming new children into the afternoon session. The current children cannot wait to make lots of new friends.
Have a wonderful Easter everybody.
