Salem Police officers monitoring the protest at the capitol mall today, Jan. 8, 2022, reported a gathering of people giving and listening to speeches. The crowd size averaged between 50 and 100 people throughout the three-hour event. There were no participants observed carrying weapons. No acts of violence or property damage occurred.

Counter-protestors were not seen or reported at the event.

Officers proactively patrolled the downtown area on bicycles and marked vehicles.

No Salem Police involvement was required.

The Salem Police Department and Oregon State Police are aware of a planned protest on the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol and it is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.

For events that occur at the state capitol, the Oregon State Police (OSP) has jurisdiction and enforcement responsibility. However, the Salem Police Department will work in a support role to OSP and assist when requested and needed. We are prepared to address circumstances should a law enforcement response within the city be necessary.

Residents should keep in mind there is a possibility for the disruption to traffic flow in the vicinity of the capitol building in the late morning hours and into the afternoon. Stay informed through OSP’s media platforms or follow Salem Police social media for any traffic or police advisories.
