Weekly Newsletter 14th January 2021

Welcome to West Meadows Weekly!

It has been great to welcome parents of both Year 6 and Year 2 into school this week. Thank you to all of those who came to share in what the children have been learning. The children have all really impressed me this week with their enthusiasm for mathematics learning and lots of our children are working hard to earn their multiplication and division maths badges. I’ve been impressed with how much they have been practising at home!

We are excited to be holding Times Tables Rockstars Day next Friday when all children can dress up as a rock star, popstar or festival goer for the day and we will be holding TT Rockstars competitions throughout the day. This is a great way for children to learn their multiplication and division facts both at home and at school.

Homework

Following your feedback on our recent Parent Questionnaire, we have reviewed our school Homework Policy to ensure that homework is relevant, manageable and appropriate for our children across school. All children in Key Stage 1 and 2 will receive an arithmetic task for maths, spellings and reading weekly. As a school we will be investing in a new online learning platform, Spelling Shed, to support the children with learning their spellings at home.

Start and end of day collection of pupils

Due to the rising number of cases of Covid 19 we have decided that to help with the safety of all we are going to put the one way system back in the playground from Monday 17th January. Can everyone please enter up the ramp then walk around the playground and exit via the Year 6 classroom as before.

Could we please ask that if an older sibling is collecting a child at the end of the school day that they do not come onto the playground with large groups of friends and wait quietly outside of the classroom so that children can focus on their learning at the end of the day.

Thank you very much for your support.

Census Day

In the Spring term, a census is carried out in schools to see how many children are taking up the option of a school meal. The more children we have eating school dinner on the day of the census, the more school receives in funding and other benefits. This year, our Spring census takes place on Thursday 20th January. We will be offering all of our children a free school meal on this day. Look out for a letter next week explaining more about this and what the meal options will be on the day as they will not follow the usual meal option online.

School Vandalism

Unfortunately our school grounds were broken into again at some point last weekend, the wild walk damaged and a number of balls that we provide the children with to use at playtimes thrown over the fence to Kirk Balk. The Wild Walk is being repaired and will be back up and running for children to use next week and we will be looking at ways to ensure people cannot get onto the site after hours in order to ensure that all of our children have opportunities to access outdoor learning.

Attendance matters

Every Monday we will celebrate our children’s achievements, both in school and at home, including their attendance in school. Good attendance is vital for your child’s education and means they can make the most of all aspects of school life.
