Spring Growth Nursery, summer term, week 2

The beauty of this time of year is that we see growth all around us. Green shoots coming up through the ground, new life outside, and the children's development becomes clear as we celebrate their new achievements.

We are most excited this week about the significant milestone in our reading. Every day since February we have been examining a new sound and we now are familiar all 26 single-letter sounds and corresponding pictures.

The children are clearly feeling empowered by this. Writing and mark-making is valued and appearing all over, even at forest school!

Learning together and learning independently.

We went on an exploration walk this week and discovered an old train line. There were many questions. 'What is it?', 'Why is it here?', 'Is there a giant sleeping in the truck..?'

The huge trucks.
Balancing on the old abandoned tracks.
Jumping off the hills
Sitting for a snack and a chat.
Bonding with friends.

We continue to investigate plant growth. Mrs Shaw has helped us to plant some seeds outside. Inside, we have had the opportunity to look more closely at seeds.

Making a small hole.
Planting pea seeds.
Cutting open fruit to find the seeds.
Some fruit had large pips, some had tiny black seeds.
Setting up a science experiment to observe seeds germinating.
Giving our seeds water and light.

All this talk of seeds and growing plants has got us thinking about why we need to grow things anyway. We know we get food from growing plants. We are also learning about how nature is both helpful and beautiful. In the creative zone, we followed instructions to use a mortar and pestle to grind up petals and leaves with honey and egg white to make paint, very similar to how they used to do it 'long ago' in the 17th Century.

We may have added a little chalk powder into the mix to boost the colours... shh!

The mixing continued in our PSHE. This time however we brewed up a friendship potion. We decided on which ingredients make a good friend (such as being kind and sharing) and added them in. Everyone took at turn stirring and then we sprinkled it on ourselves. Magic.

Thinking hard about what it means to be a good friend.
Adding 'being helpful.'
Stirring in 'taking turns'.
There were many more ingredients!
The children continued their potion mixing in their play outside.

A few final photos...

Making portraits with found objects, freestyle painting, helping animals in our vet role-play area, obstacle courses outside, and counting counters in maths. Another busy week!
